The College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) is one of the largest academic units on the UW Seattle campus, employing over 1400 tenure-track and research faculty, in 43 departments and centers, and generating an average $120 million dollars in sponsored research each year. The Applied Math Department hosts a vibrant community of scholars dedicated to conducting world-class interdisciplinary research in the physical, biological, and engineering sciences. It has 15 faculty members, 14 adjunct faculty, 21 affiliate faculty, five emeritus faculty and seven staff members serving 200 undergraduate majors, 50 doctoral students, 300 master’s students as well as non-majors enrolled in courses. The Computational Finance and Risk Management (CFRM) program is housed under the Department of Applied Mathematics and responsible for approximately 100 of the master’s degree students in the Department.
Applied and computational mathematics incorporates interdisciplinary study in the physical, engineering, and biological sciences. We provide dynamic and engaging graduate training that is especially strong in scientific computing and modern mathematical methods and in the application areas of mathematical biology, nonlinear waves and coherent structures, mathematical finance, and climate modeling.
The Department of Applied Mathematics has an outstanding opportunity for a Counseling Services Coordinator.
Program student advising: 45% Provide one-on-one advising for online and campus students for the CFRM MS degree and Computational Finance Certificate, and serve as a backup for AMATH advising. This includes but is not limited to the following:
Academic planning, funding options, registration process Assist students in the interpretation of program and university requirements and policies Advise students on their progress in the program, available program paths, and achievement of graduation requirements Monitor student quarterly progress and help students overcome problems that hinder academic performance Manage the proctor tracking system for online students Contribute to Canvas resource pages for current students Guide students through University systems to avoid or overcome administrative issues Work with the Career Services Manager on internship and career opportunities for students Act as liaison with International Student Services (ISS) and provide students basic CPT and OPT guidance.
Prospective Student Advising: 25% Advise prospective online and campus students for the CFRM MS degree, Computational Finance Certificate, and future programs. This includes but is not limited to the following:
Admissions process, academic planning, program prerequisites Manage application process with program admissions committee and program director Manage the admissions process for the MS and Certificate programs: manage admissions files and file management system, update and review application and admissions materials for the faculty review committee Represent the program at recruiting events
Program Management: 30% Lead student engagement activities such as recruitment, orientation, graduation, and other program and department events Manage CFRM and selected departmental website content and oversee related online activities, including newsletters and email/advertising campaigns in conjunction with the System Administrator Collaborate with CFRM Program Director and staff to develop marketing and outreach strategies Facilitate and oversee annual recruitment strategy with the goal of diversifying student populations in partnership with program staff and director Implement course changes and program changes through the College of Arts & Sciences, Academic Affairs & Planning, and University Curriculum Office (Kuali) Consult with program director on MS admissions, to ensure that enrollment and budgetary goals are in alignment Maintain program documentation Provide training and advice to program faculty, including on-boarding new faculty Coordinate with CFRM Program Director and AMATH Administrator to hire program affiliate instructors and teaching assistants Assist with implementation and program operations of new lecture capturing process. Coordinate with campus units involved in the administration and management of self-sustaining degree and non-degree programs Conduct data collection for the CFRM program as requested by faculty, university units, and external partners such as ranking agencies. Act as the CFRM liaison to the UW Graduate School and Continuum College In consultation with CFRM Program Director, coordinate and manage course scheduling, including Time Schedule entry Attend program and department staff meetings Attend Graduate School, ISS, and other meetings with campus partners as appropriate Other duties as assigned
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor's degree. A combination of student counseling and program management experience: minimum of three years.
This position requires a regular workday schedule of 8 hours a day. Occasional special events may require work on weekday evenings and/or weekends. May involve some travel.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Excellent communication, problem-solving, decision-making, and collaborative skills. Ability to take initiative, work independently, but also be part of a cohesive team. Strong competency with MS Office, especially with Excel to create and maintain program databases and to generate reports. Commitment to working with multicultural, diverse, inclusive, underserved populations. Ability to interact professionally with a broad spectrum of individuals and groups. Familiarity with systems/platforms and tools technology for support of program pedagogical, administrative, and marketing purposes Demonstrated ability to work effectively under pressure in the context of a fast-paced environment, with frequent interruptions and managing a complex, multi-faceted and growing program.
