Reporting to the Assistant Vice Chancellor, Connected Learning and Sponsored Research (AVC), the Director serves as the lead for the development and operation of programs reflective of UW Bothell’s commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion that involve more students with actively contested questions, empirical observation, artistic inquiries, and the application of new technologies. This individual will serve as the point person for undergraduate research and creative practice activities, joining the Connected Learning leadership team whose goal it is to advance quality co/curricular experiences that promote retention, civic leadership, and career aspirations for students. As a resource to the academic units and the UW Bothell community at large, the director will collaborate to implement a sustainable infrastructure aimed at increasing the number of students participating in undergraduate research and creative practice.
To support the complexity and collaborative nature of our work at the University of Washington Bothell, the Director, Research and Creative Projects for Undergraduates should refer to both the role’s job description as well as the position’s responsibility matrix which details the decision-making domains for the role and includes the dimensions of governance and expectations for working and consulting with leadership and peers.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Development/Administration
•The director is a member of the connected learning leadership team which is convened by the AVC and includes the director of global engagement and the director of connected learning. •The director is responsible for developing and executing business plans that align with the campus strategic plan and the connected learning strategic plan and are specific to undergraduate research and creative projects. They will develop and oversee programs aimed at recruiting faculty and students to undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activities. •This individual will serve as a starting point for students wishing to pursue research and will develop and expand pathways for exploring undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activities in each of the schools and programs, starting with 1st year and pre-major programs and leading up to graduate school. •They will plan events designed to engage students and celebrate achievements of both students and mentors, supporting students in connecting to projects and mentors. •This individual will promote summer and academic year research opportunities. •In partnership with the marketing and communications manager and the connected learning advisor, they will develop strategies to reach a larger population of students and coordinate fellowships, scholarships and awards related to undergraduate research and creative projects. •The Director is accountable for the implementation of the undergraduate research mentor award and for allocating funds to support the integration of high impact practices into the curriculum. •In partnership with OCL Directors and the Learning and Teaching Director, the director will support faculty engagement in undergraduate research and creative projects. This may include hosting workshops and/or supporting fellowships, and will always leverage existing faculty expertise.
Career Connected Learning and Research Partnerships/Collaboration.
•The Director of Undergraduate Research and Creative Projects convenes an internal steering committee quarterly. They serve as the liaison to the Undergraduate Research Program in Seattle and are expected to be (or become) an active member of the Council of Undergraduate Research (CUR). •They will facilitate the development, in collaboration with the Community Engaged Learning and Research team, of relationships between UW Bothell and local community-based organizations with common interests in undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activities. •This individual collaborates with faculty members to identify and place students in career connected opportunities on campus and in communities and industry. •They work with undergraduate admissions to present information to prospective students and parents regarding undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activities and build collaborative partnerships with relevant campus offices including but not limited to: the library; community engaged learning and research; global initiatives; career services; all schools and programs, particularly 1st year and pre-major programs, and internship coordinators. •The director maintains strong relationships with local and national organizations such as the Council on Undergraduate Research to identify and implement best practices as well as benefit from the counsel of experienced colleagues.
Assessment/Advancement.
•In partnership with the connected learning assessment lead, collect, analyze and report a variety of information about undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activities to internal and external constituencies. •Seek external funding to support student undergraduate research, scholarship and creative activities, particularly among 1st generation college attendees. •Track students participating in undergraduate research and creative projects •Acknowledge donors by facilitating student recognition of the impact and importance of their gift.
Staff supervision.
In addition to team leadership and management responsibilities, in the first several months, the director will be responsible for hiring and managing a community engaged research program manager and student
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
•Master's Degree in Arts & Humanities or related field. •At least three years’ experience in education, research, industry, or related field.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
•Passion for undergraduate research with experience successfully mentoring students •Knowledge and understanding of issues related to racism and other systems of oppression and ability to translate this knowledge to higher education context •Awareness of how actions and words influence people and how situations can perceived as inclusive (or not). •Success working in a collaborative environment where consultation, flexibility, creativity, and cooperation are essential. •Experience and/or interest in fundraising, grant writing and seeking external support for the work. •Ability to appreciate and synthesize information from a wide variety of disciplines. •Strong management, organization, verbal and written communication skills. •Demonstrated ability to use basic and some advanced functions of Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook), and web-based forms.
DESIRED:
•Experience with program and student learning assessment preferred. Applicants with knowledge of or experience with interdisciplinary studies, teaching, and mentoring undergraduates in research are encouraged to apply.
