Harvard Medical School (HMS) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean for Medical Education (DME). Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, the DME leads all aspects of the Program in Medical Education (PME), providing strategic vision, oversight, planning, and implementation, and ensuring the highest standards of excellence for medical education. As a member of the Dean’s Leadership Council, the DME partners with colleagues across HMS, Harvard University, and HMS-affiliated hospitals to advance the school’s dedication to alleviating suffering and improving health and well-being and the PME’s mission—to prepare a diverse group of students to become the next generation of leaders in all domains of medicine and to prepare students for a commitment to lifelong learning necessary to stay abreast of the ever-expanding scope of scientific and medical knowledge. The DME models and champions the values of diversity, inclusion, and equity at the core of HMS’ mission. As the PME’s lead representative, the DME serves as a spokesperson to expand resources for the medical education mission and fosters engagement across key internal and external constituencies, including national organizations focused on advancing the study of medicine. The DME serves as chair of the Educational Policy and Curriculum Committee, the governing body of the MD program, and as HMS’ Faculty Accreditation Lead for the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME).
Each year, HMS selects 165 students from a pool of 8000+ applicants for its MD program, which comprises two curricular tracks, its signature Pathways curriculum and the Health Sciences & Technology (HST) program, an interdisciplinary curriculum focused on translational medical science and engineering. The new DME will join HMS at an exciting and pivotal time. While continuing to guide evolution of the Pathways program, the DME will have the opportunity to lead the school in the design of a new clerkship model, redesign of HST’s curriculum, design of a new healthcare leadership and transformation program, and the advancement of a “core teaching faculty” model, while maintaining exposure of HMS students to their traditional faculty role models and supporting the intrinsic role of all faculty to teach.
The incoming DME ensures optimal performance and continuous quality improvement of a robust, matrixed operation that spans curricular, student support, and other administrative and leadership functions. The DME directs a senior leadership team across planning and administration (admissions, registrar, finance, financial aid, scholarly engagement); student affairs (academic societies, learning resources, disability services); multicultural affairs, recruitment, and support; the office of medical education (faculty development [The Academy], curriculum, assessment, quality improvement); HST, MD-PhD, and other joint-degree programs; and affiliated hospital undergraduate medical education.
Qualifications and Experience: MD degree; academic rank of Associate Professor or Professor (the latter preferred); established record of accomplishment in academic medicine as an educator, innovator, and published scholar; 10+ years’ administrative, managerial, and budgetary experience in complex, matrixed organizations; demonstrated commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture; extensive teaching and mentoring experience; a record as a highly ethical, authentic, mission-driven leader and clear communicator, committed to excellence, impeccable standards, and transparency; exemplary experience in building collaborative relationships and engendering trust; familiarity with affiliate hospital relationships and sensitivity to the impact on the academic mission and on faculty of the changes in hospital practice patterns and expansion of hospital networks; and a distinguished career with a national reputation for well-honed clinical, educational, and scholarly leadership to serve as a role model for students in the MD program.
