Position Summary
Columbia University School of Social Work, the "first and finest" school of social work in the United States, invites applications for the full-time position of Assistant Director in the Office of Career and Leadership Management.
The Office of Career and Leadership Management guides students and alumni toward meaningful careers through strategic collaborations, innovative programs, and educational opportunities that foster knowledge, skills, and connections essential for success. These include career counseling, career programming, workshops, events, and information sessions; job fairs; campus & online recruitment; and an alumni career mentor program.
Reporting to the Director of Career and Leadership Management, the Assistant Director will have the lead responsibility of coordinating, developing, and implementing events that enhance students??? and graduates??? career prospects, trajectories, and outcomes. They will also be responsible for providing ongoing career guidance and support, partnering with employers on recruitment initiatives, and managing communications and outreach.
Responsibilities
Career Counseling and Programming ??? Provide career counseling and coaching in person, virtually, and by phone on topics including but not limited to career assessment, goal-setting, and decision-making; personal branding (e.g., resumes, cover letters, and LinkedIn); networking; interviewing; salary negotiation; job search strategies; graduate school and fellowship applications; professional licensing; and general career management. ??? Provide resources and information regarding services, events, and career options and opportunities, as well as connections to alumni offering support and employers as appropriate. ??? Develop and deliver workshops and webinars on various career-related topics, including customized seminars requested by faculty, student groups, and administrators. ??? Manage the planning/logistics and marketing of events, such as workshops, panels, information sessions, job fairs, and networking receptions, using strategic outreach and engagement methods. ??? Contribute to yearly programming by assessing the needs and interests of students and alumni and collaborating with student groups, faculty, and administrators to identify and implement new initiatives.
Communications and Technology ??? Serve as the first-line responder for all general inquiries. ??? Assist in managing the online career management system (job board, appointment scheduling system, and resource database) and webpage. Provide user support to students, alumni, and employers. ??? Produce office communications to students, such as newsletters, billboards, and email messages to promote events, opportunities, and resources and share student and alumni success stories. ??? Represent the school and career services at internal and external meetings and events.
Employer Relations ??? Cultivate, develop, and sustain relationships with employers and alumni for job development. ??? Coordinate campus recruitment activities and initiatives. ??? Travel within the NYC metro area for employer relations and job fairs.
Operations ??? Track student and alumni engagement, relevant achievements, and employment outcomes for data collection and analysis. ??? Co-supervise graduate interns/assistants and federal work-study students. ??? Update and maintain written and web-based resources. ??? Assist in policy development and goal setting for the office. ??? Coordinate and help with large events as part of the larger student services team. ??? Perform other duties as assigned by the director to ensure the success of career services on behalf of the school, its students, and alumni.

Minimum Qualifications
??? Bachelor's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, higher education, human resources, or a related field. ??? Two to four years of experience in coaching/counseling individuals about their professional development and a working knowledge of resume/cover letter review and development.

??? Strong customer service orientation and relationship management skills. ??? Skilled presenter to both small and large audiences, and strong writing and editing abilities. ??? Demonstrated project and event management skills and ability to juggle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while maintaining strong attention to detail. ??? Training and/or workshop/webinar development and facilitation skills within a college/university setting. ??? Ability to work effectively independently and with a broad range of internal and external constituents, including students, employers, alumni, faculty, and staff. ??? Familiarity with career-related computer systems/databases and an ability to utilize and implement technology. ??? Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and G Suite. ??? Ability to approach work with an inclusive, holistic mindset and positive, growth-oriented attitude.
Preferred Qualifications
??? Master's degree in social work, counseling, psychology, higher education, human resources, or a related field. ??? Experience with career management software such as GradLeaders, email marketing and communication platforms such as Mailchimp, Canva, and WordPress, or conference and event management tools such as Zoom and CareerEco ??? Understanding of/experience with the wide variety of career paths for social workers.
