As part of the Office of Academic Programs and CALS Student Services, the Assistant Director will assist in the management and coordination of community and academic initiatives associated with CALS undergraduate programs. This service will be delivered in a team-based environment where each staff member will be expected to provide exceptional professionalism, foster collaboration and strive for premier customer service.
What you will do:
The Assistant Director of Inclusive Academic Advising will build a model of assistance that anticipates student needs and reinvents service for an improved experience; this model for success will be based on 21st Century technology, social media, teachable moments, and collaboration among students, staff, faculty, and alumni. The focus will allow the rallying of resources around students as part of the new service model to aid success. This will enhance the distributive service model with faculty and staff across CALS to provide a positive and fulfilling undergraduate experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Advising undergraduate students on academic requirements and course selection.
- Provide advice to students involved in difficult or delicate circumstances.
- Refer extreme cases to the CARE Team and/or Cornell Health center.
- Provide an enhanced and interactive advising system including on-going assistance to faculty and staff who work with CALS students.
- Be proactive using our electronic advising platforms including analyzing metrics and data available; share knowledge and expertise with the team and promote working in collaboration toward a common vision.
- Monitor students experiencing academic difficulties; provide advising to students on Academic Success Program.
- Keep faculty advisors informed.
- Provide oversight and support of student events and activities.
- Facilitate and maintain expectations of the Academic Success Program in collaboration with the Inclusive Academic Advising team, the Student Support Specialists and other university partners.
This is a full-time position located on the Ithaca campus, utilizing a hybrid weekly work schedule of up to 2 days remote and 3 days on campus during academic periods
What We Need:
- Bachelor's degree with a minimum of two years' experience working in an educational setting with students and in program planning.
- Demonstrated computer experience including report preparation and assessment.
- High level of discretion and sound judgment with confidential information is required.
- Effectively communicate and work with students, parents and families and serve in an advisory capacity in this relationship.
- Independently coordinate programs and manage activities is essential.
- Thorough knowledge of undergraduate programs.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of the mission of the College.
- Must be organized and detail-driven; strong interpersonal experience and relationship-building qualities, good public speaker who can effectively represent CALS with a variety of audiences.
- Must possess the highest standards of integrity in order to develop trust with current and new students, faculty, staff, and employers.
- Work in a team context and to set priorities, direct competing demands and to provide timely responses to urgent issues.
- Solid experience with standard desktop productivity tools, including word processing programs, database management systems, and spreadsheets.
- Sustain ethical workplace practices and confidentiality.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and then work with supervisor to begin implementing them.
- Know the linkage between metrics and efficiencies.
- Place customer/stakeholder needs as paramount by actively engaging these same constituencies to continuously seek opportunities for improvement.
