Summary of Duties:
The Upward Bound Program is a federally funded academic support program that prepares and motivates low-income, first-generation, and/or academically at-risk high school students to successfully complete a college education. The target schools are Eisenhower and Highland High Schools located in Yakima County.
The College Readiness Coach shall be responsible to develop, & implement a 6-week Summer Academy for Upward Bound participants in compliance with Upward Bound Grant Expectations and Objectives as set forth by the US Department of Education. This position will require several weeks away on various college campuses during the summer months and overnight supervision of program students during the summer and academic year.
Duties will include planning, developing, implementing, and oversight of a 6-week Summer Academy for Upward Bound students. Additionally, the Academic Program Coordinator will coordinate program services, assist as a liaison with high schools, build positive working relationships with key community stakeholders, provide academic and career advising, document student contacts, conduct workshops for students and parents within the Spanish speaking community, assess student needs and developing an academic service plan for each student to assure academic success and preparation for college. The position will also keep the Spanish speaking parents/guardians appraised of their students' progress and will assist the parents in supporting their children's academic success.
A minimum of one day each week will be spent in each target school.
Required Qualifications:
Positions require a Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of professional work experience in student services or related education/experience. A Master's degree in a related field may substitute for one (1) year of professional work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis.
Experience working with confidential information and entering simple data.
The ability to work a standard 9am-6pm work schedule with periodic weekend and evening travel.
Must have or be able to obtain at the time of hire, a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications:
Two (2) years of full-time experience advising or teaching high school students.
Bilingual/Biliterate in English and Spanish.
Experience with students from a diverse background.
Experience working in a higher educational setting; familiarity with academic program and requirements; familiarity with financial aid policies/procedures.
Skill in facilitating groups and working with community partners.

This is a temporary position with a one year commitment expected to end March 2024. Renewal is dependent on the need for extension and/or if additional funding is secured to extend employment. Historically, funding has been successfully renewed for several years and we expect funding to be continually renewed.

This position has been designated by the department to require a background check because it requires access to children or vulnerable adults as defined by RCW 74.34, engages in law enforcement, requires security clearance, interacts with WSU students in a counseling or advising capacity, has access to personal identifying and/or financial information, unsupervised access to university buildings/property, or other business-related need. A background check will not be completed until an initial determination of qualification for employment has been made.
