POSITION SUMMARY:
The Assistant Director of Intercultural Student Programs (ADISP) assists the Associate Dean of Student Engagement & Inclusion in advancing Vanguard University's commitment to racial justice, equity, and peacemaking (reconciliation), improves student retention and success, supports student growth in personal ethnic/racial identity development and intercultural relations. This position fosters racial justice and works to improve the campus climate by enhancing the involvement and academic/personal success of underrepresented students and other historically marginalized communities through partnerships with university staff and faculty. The Assistant Director of Intercultural Student Program's main responsibility is to assist student leaders with developing and implementing programs and activities that build awareness and foster understanding and acceptance amongst members of the campus community especially during commemorative (heritage/history) times throughout the year (i.e. Hispanic Heritage Month, Black History Month, APIC Heritage Month, etc.). This is a 12-month career position that reports to the Associate Dean of Student Engagement and Inclusion.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Design and implement programs to educate and explore the intersection of identities to promote the story of all community members. Supervise, train, mentor student leaders serving on the Intercultural Student Programs (ISP) team. Through collaboration with faculty, staff and administration, plan and assess the following annual events: Compassion in Action Retreat Special emphasis months for Hispanic/Latino(a) Heritage, Native American Heritage, Black History, Women's History, Asian and Pacific Islander Heritage Coordination of all student leaders attending the Student Congress on Racial Reconciliation (SCORR) Multicultural Graduation Celebration Assesses and train students in areas of multicultural awareness, cultural sensitivity, equity, diversity, and inclusion. Understands, articulates, and addresses issues of multiculturalism, cross-cultural intersections, racism, sexism, classism, cultural appropriation, ableism, inclusive excellence, etc. Proactively respond to teachable moments, issues, or concerns related to diversity and inclusive excellence on campus. Advocate for the needs of traditionally underrepresented students on-campus including Veterans, first-generation college students, foster students, undocumented students, and students of color. Collaborate with the offices and departments across campus to support retention and graduation of a diverse student body. Plan and participate in implementing the four-year discipleship plan. Provides administrative support including but not limited to: handling telephone communications, dealing with administrative problems and inquiries as appropriate, serve as a primary point of contact and liaison between the program, students, and external constituencies on a range of day-to-day issues, performs data entry, data retrieval, and client-coding on university software systems (i.e. Colleague, Advise, MyVU Portal), maintains social media oversight, controls website management, manages and reconciles an annual programming budget Serve as a member of the University Diversity and Inclusive Excellence Team (DIET). Serve as a member and supports assigned initiatives and programs in the Office of Student Engagement.
GENERAL:
Maintains professional development in higher education, service learning, diversity issues, and global development. Provides effective leadership and management of student leaders engaged in multicultural education. Participates in the spiritual growth, development, care, and support of other employees assigned near position. Participates in community or University committees that will enhance diversity and inclusion programming. Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS(ASSISTANT DIRECTOR):
Master's degree preferred with an emphasis in Student Development, Leadership, Administration, Missions, Cross-Cultural Ministry, or related field. Two years administrative experience with program development, budget management, and ministry with young adults or student development programs. Experience with cross-cultural immersion, multi-ethnic programming, and diverse communities. Maintains a lifestyle in consonance with sound Christian principles and those promulgated by the institution. Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of issues surrounding underserved and underrepresented communities in higher education. Strong written and communication skills. Knowledge and acceptance of principles and philosophies of Vanguard University. Note: Candidates will be evaluated based on their qualifications and may be filled at the Coordinator, Assistant Director, or Associate Director level based on qualifications
IDEAL CANDIDATE:
The ideal candidates possess the following: Excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Clear understanding of theories of cross-cultural communication and ethnic identity development. Demonstrated experience in planning and executing small- and large-scale programming and events. Proficiency in use of computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint preferred.
