Job Description Summary
The Director of Accounts Receivable is responsible for managing the University’s accounts receivable function which includes student billing, tuition and fee assessment, cashiering, payment plans, refunds, collections and form 1098-T preparation. The Director of Accounts Receivable is located on Michigan Tech’s campus in the Student Financial Services Center and will provide excellent customer service to students and work collaboratively with the student financial aid office.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities (other duties may be assigned)
1. Responsible for tuition and fee assessment in accordance with Board-approved rates, and responsible for producing student bills. 2. Supervise the receipt and deposit of all fund received by the University, including tuition, room and board, Federal grants and other income. 3. Responsible for generating refunds to students and third-parties in a timely manner. 4. Assist students, parents, and other student service departments with research and analysis of student accounts and make decisions to resolve complex student account problems or discrepancies. 5. Collaborate with other university departments to routinely test and manage system integration for business processes. 6. Perform daily reconciliations of general and subsidiary ledgers and payment gateway. 7. Oversee collection process of student debt. 8. Keep up-to-date on federal rules and regulations that pertain to student finances such as cash management, form 1098-T preparation, collections, and Perkins loan program. 9. Lead team of exempt and non-exempt staff to provide excellent customer service to students and other constituents. 10. Develop and implement policies and procedures for effectiveness and efficiencies while adhering to rules, regulations and internal controls. 11. Commit to learning about continuous improvement strategies and applying them to everyday work. Actively engage in University continuous improvement initiatives. 12. Apply safety-related knowledge, skills, and practices to everyday work. 13. Other duties as assigned.
• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business, Finance and/or a related field from an accredited college or university.
Required Experience (minimum requirements)
• Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in accounting, accounts receivable or related position. • Knowledge of and experience with ERP (enterprise resource planning) software.
Desirable Education and/or Experience
• Professional experience in Higher Education. • Experience using Ellucian Banner ERP software. • Experience supervising staff.
• Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality of student and financial records and information. • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff. • Demonstrated ability to analyze problems in ERP software and recommend improvements. • Demonstrated excellent customer service focus, with ability to provide directions, information and answers accurately, professionally, tactfully and in a timely manner. • Demonstrated commitment to contribute to a safe work environment.
Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities
• Knowledge of Federal regulations in higher education, such as FERPA. • Knowledge of collection laws.
