Under the direction of the David and Carol Matevia Endowed University Pastor, the Assistant Director advises faith-based student groups, provides campus-wide spiritual programming, and builds relationships with Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) congregations to aid in recruitment efforts. The individual also acts as an ambassador and steward who represents Wittenberg at ELCA church wide events. This position supports the spiritual beliefs and exploration of all belief systems, religions, and worldviews, as well as assists Wittenberg in fostering a community that values diversity, equity, and inclusion in religious and spiritual life. This is a full-time, exempt-level position, reporting to the David and Carol Matevia Endowed University Pastor.
Essential functions include but are not limited to:
Leadership, Supervision, Management
Guides and supports the ministries of faith-based student organizations including Weaver Chapel Association and Campus Food Pantry.
Plans and executes 1-2 annual retreats for Wittenberg students related to spiritual well being.
Attends various ELCA conferences and gatherings to speak, lead workshops and staff an exhibitor table. Builds partnerships with ELCA constituencies to increase exposure for Wittenberg among Lutheran church and their youth. Creates innovative marketing materials for the institution.
Coordinates closely with the Office of Admissions to organize ELCA events at Wittenberg such as synod or regional youth conferences, church retreats, youth overnights, and other events.
Completes Lutheran student recruitment tasks such as connecting directly with prospective students, utilizing SLATE to track prospective students, sending mailing and mass email and maintaining (mail/email) lists.
College Worship, Ceremonies, Traditions, and Spiritual Leadership
Assists University Pastor in planning and execution of religious programming that prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Provides oversight for interfaith prayer spaces and university-sponsored worship events.
Assists University Pastor with worship planning and leadership.
Works with University Pastor on special assignments such as interfaith projects, service learning events and diversity and inclusion events. Liaise with other campus offices such as Student Development, Athletics and the Hagen Center for shared events or projects.
Spiritual Care and Emotional Support
Primarily for students and secondarily for faculty and staff, provides spiritual care and emotional support to the Wittenberg University community.
Nurtures the spirit of community on campus through organization of faith based programs and events.
Seeks opportunities for fellowship with students both formally and informally.
Student Development and Community Engagement
Fosters healthy relationships with other campus offices through spiritual support, event attendance, and program partnerships.
Provides opportunities for students to examine their belief systems and meaning making.
Serves as an active member of the Student Development team, including attending meetings, retreats and trainings, and assisting with other major programs and events.
Participates in appropriate staff development opportunities; serves on campus, in the community, and on professional association committees; appropriately keeps supervisor abreast of matters sensitive in nature.
Performs other relevant duties as assigned such as special projects, programs, developmental activities, etc.
Job Requirements:
Requirements include:
A bachelor's degree is required; a Master's degree is preferred. Formal training in theology, higher education, and/or nonprofit management is preferred.
1 - 3 years of relevant work experience is required. Experience working with interfaith organizations is preferred.
Competency and experience using Microsoft Office software is required. Digital production skills and/or audio visual experience are preferred.
Knowledge of ELCA church structures is preferred.
Excellent professional verbal and written communication skills.
Ideal candidate will demonstrate strong organization skills, superior attention to details, flexibility, creativity, and a strong ability to multi-task.
Ability to handle sensitive information and maintain confidentiality is essential.
Willingness and ability to work some evenings and weekends, as well as travel occasionally.
Ability to utilize a computer for extended periods.
Routinely move and transport equipment and supplies weighing up to 20 pounds (with assistance).
A valid driver's license is required; must meet required insurance qualifications found in Wittenberg Motor Pool policies and procedures. If license is from out of state, successful candidate will need to obtain a valid Ohio driver's license within 30 days of hire date.
