General Description of the Position Reporting directly to the Associate Vice-President for Student Success, the Associate Director of Academic Services for Student Athletes (ASSA) is responsible for managing the day-to-day and long-range operations, development, and programming of a multifaceted Student-Athlete Support Center. This position is critical to the persistence and timely graduation of student athletes. The role allows for a broad scope of administrative responsibility to include managing the caseload of students identified as at-risk and to provide programming for those student athletes. The position will have oversight of the Academic Performance Program (APP) and assist with the implementation and evaluation of the NCAA Accelerating Academic Success Program.
The Associate Director will serve as an additional liaison to the Director of Athletics pertaining to APR, APP, and assist with duties and responsibilities relating to the NCAA AASP Grant. This position will serve as an additional external liaison with the MEAC and NCAA in regards to the APP and APR data.
Essential Functions The following are the functions essential to performing this job: 1. Provide oversight and support of Program Planning & Development. 2. Perform Administrative duties and hold meetings with Coaches in relation to student progress and APR projections. 3. Recommend appropriate interventions for students who are having difficulty with course material(s). 4. Assist student-athletes in meeting their academic objectives, progress toward a degree, and NCAA eligibility requirements; the preparation of each team's NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) and Graduation Success Rate (GSR) and NCAA eligibility certification. 5. Assist with screening and hiring graduate students and student employees who may be assisting the department advisors. 6. Manage the day to day responsibilities of our Seasonal Staff, Graduate Students, and student workers. 7. Develop of ASSA Standard Operation Procedures 8. Assist with Contract Development for vendors, speakers, etc. 9. Attend Open house, New Student orientation, Summer Academy, Onboarding, etc. to educate parents and prospective student athletes. 10. Demonstrate a working knowledge of NCAA rules and regulation 11. Maintains an awareness & understanding of the curriculum guides, academic rules and regulations, and the unique needs of student-athletes. 12. Maintain a working knowledge and ongoing awareness of NCAA/MEAC rules & regulation, and policies and procedures of the University. 13. Assist with responding to student, parent, faculty and coach inquiries. 14. Regularly communicate with student-athletes regarding events and deadlines throughout the academic year and disseminate information to new and continuing students throughout the academic year. 15. Maintain and update advisee records through regular review of academic files and transcript evaluations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities The candidate must possess the following skills and abilities to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodations: 1. Competence in oral and written communication skills necessary for effective advising and student success coaching. 8. Must be optimistic, positive and supportive in all interactions with others. 9. Demonstrated flexibility in a changing administrative model.
Qualification Standards 1. Education: Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s degree preferred, in Psychology, Sport Psychology, Counseling, Higher Education Administration, College Student Development, Education and/or Athletic Counseling preferred or related degree. 2. Successful experience: 5+ years of academic support, counseling and development of programs for student-athletes required; preferably at the Division 1 level 3. Knowledge of APR projections 4. Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations 5. Knowledge of academic guidance counseling – active listening skills, complex problem solving, deductive and inductive reasoning, etc. 6. Demonstrated ability to motivate student-athletes to academically achieve 7. Demonstrated leadership and management skills 8. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills 9. Strong organizational, data management, and report writing skills 10. Able to work with a diverse student population, including minority and international students. 11. Must have strong computer skills and can demonstrate mastery knowledge in the use of computers and using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Publisher, Outlook & Access) and BANNER or like SIS systems to create and produce written reports, data tracking, and other documents.
