Situated on the unceded, ancestral and traditional territory of the dx?d?w?abš (Duwamish people), The College of Education at The University of Washington, Seattle, has an outstanding opportunity for a Recruitment and Support Specialist for Teacher Candidates to positively impact the racial, ethnic and linguistic diversity of the educator workforce in the region to more authentically match the K-12 students we serve. The COE Recruitment and Support Specialist will work with five Teacher Education programs to expand the number of outstanding, highly qualified applicants with particular attention on recruiting candidates who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and/or multilingual speakers.
POSITION PURPOSE

The Recruitment and Support Specialist will provide direct outreach to potential teacher candidates and will be responsible for cultivating relationships and working closely with tribal communities, organizations that support individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color, and/or multilingual speakers and school districts. The Recruitment and Support Specialist must create a welcoming and inclusive environment - especially for aspiring educators who may have experienced oppression and/or trauma in their own schooling experiences. This position requires an individual who is especially adept at listening and developing relationships, who will surface potential applicants’ future aspirations, provide guidance to prospective candidates on unique aspects of our teacher education programs including entry and degree requirements, application procedures, enrollment procedures, registration assistance, financial aid and other resources.
Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Teacher Education, the Recruitment and Support Specialist will be responsible for attending external recruitment events and leading teacher education recruitment by hosting, planning and facilitating College of Education recruitment events, leading application and selection processes, inviting district and alumni engagement, supporting enrollment processes and ongoing retention of teacher education students. The Recruitment and Support Specialist, in conjunction with the five program directors, will organize and plan for multiple recruitment cycles to ensure potential teacher candidates meet varying application requirements and deadlines.
The Recruitment and Support Specialist will work in partnership with a Retention and Support Specialist and the COE Office of Student Services to contribute to COE diversity recruitment and retention strategies and will coordinate efforts with UW Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity (OMA&D) and the Office of Graduate Student Equity and Excellence (GSEE).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Assess the current candidate recruitment and application processes to identify inequities and/or inaccessibility and to address barriers and strengthen recruitment and retention systems with particular attention on recruiting and selecting teacher education candidates who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color, multilingual speakers, and/or first-generation college students. Must be able to travel to cultivate contacts with, and actively reach out to, prospective teacher education applicants in order to recruit for COE teacher certification programs. Respond to programmatic questions from prospective students through individual consultation, workshops, electronic and printed materials. Develop and maintain relationships with organizations and offices, both on campus and off campus, to improve recruitment and retention efforts with special attention on nurturing relationships with organizations that support individuals who identify as Black, Indigenous, People of Color, multilingual speakers, and/or first-generation college students. Work with the Office of Institutional Research and Office of Student Services to maintain and use teacher education data in the recruitment database and develop and track recruitment, application, enrollment and retention goals and benchmarks for the teacher certification programs. Work with the Office of Student Services, the Seattle Teacher Residency recruitment team and individual teacher education programs to plan, coordinate, promote, and implement teacher education information sessions and other outreach with prospective students. Work closely with the Office of Student Services to articulate and manage an effective system of supporting students through application, selection and enrollment processes. Assist potential students through the application process, and support teacher education candidates to choose the program that aligns best to career and learning needs. In coordination with program directors and teacher education personnel, take the lead in organizing, supporting and directly conducting application reviews and interviews. Assume shared responsibility for assessing and modifying/updating website and print content related to recruitment, application and enrollment processes. Complete other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Master’s degree and at least two years experience working as a recruiter in higher education or for other organizations or institution.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Experience in authentic, respectful community partnership development Knowledge of and practice in effective recruiting and retention approaches with demonstrated experience in increasing diversity, as well as the ability to develop and implement new initiatives in this area. Knowledge of public schools, the field of P-12 public school teaching and teacher education. Demonstrated ability to use relational databases, web-based technologies, and an ability to integrate these technologies into educational and student-support environments. Sensitivity and ability to handle highly confidential information. Excellent interpersonal communication skills, including experience working with individuals who are multilingual and/or from diverse backgrounds Current experience and proficiency using Microsoft Office suite programs (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook, etc); and Google Workspace. Ability to travel
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience as an academic advisor. Proficiency using and engaging with social media platforms.
