Serves in a leadership position to promote Washington University as a venue for a variety of academic and non-academic summer conferences and programs; oversees all programs and services related to summer conferences; coordinates the provision of a wide range of services required to support a successful summer conference experience.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Responsible for summer conferences and program activities to enhance Washington Universityâ™s ability to capitalize on market opportunities to increase revenues and to promote the University as a venue for summer conferences and programs.
Develop a comprehensive assessment of the Universityâ™s current capabilities, assets and shortcomings to provide a full range of summer conference services.
Develop, implement and adjust, as needed, a strategic plan for summer conferences and programs that is consistent with Universityâ™s vision and that recognizes our opportunities for growth, identifies shortcomings and recommends changes to maximize our potential.
As part of the strategic plan, identify the appropriate âœnichesâ to which the Universityâ™s summer conferences and programs should be marketed.
Develop a comprehensive marketing plan to promote Washington University as a venue for summer conferences and programs.
Develop a through understanding of housing facilities, dining / catering services, meeting spaces, audio visual and information / technology capabilities.
Establish strong partnerships with other University departments that are necessary to support a successful summer conference and program experience.
Establish and maintain positive relationships with the Universityâ™s academic departments that provide programs during the summer months.
Become familiar with community resources that can be tapped to further enhance the Universityâ™s reputation as a desirable summer conference and program host.
Serve as the Universityâ™s primary representative in interacting with local, regional and national groups that seek summer conference and program services.
Provide effective supervision of staff and student workers assigned to this department, including training, establishment of goals and objectives, performance coaching and evaluation.
Provide leadership in developing the departmentâ™s annual budget, monitor expenditures, insure compliance with university accounting and financial policies and procedures.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Standard office environment; evening and weekend hours may be frequently required during summer months.
Ability and willingness to travel to promote sales and marketing; annual attendance at state and local professional development conferences.
Prior experience with contractual documents.
Prior experience in dealing with diverse clients.
Ability to work in a highly decentralized environment where results come more from persuasion and from building respect rather than as a dictated or directed outcome.
Entrepreneurial spirit with strong organizational skills, the ability to manage multi-tasks simultaneously, the willingness to take charge and to be held accountable for results.
Excellent interpersonal skills; the ability to communicate with diverse constituencies, the ability to build confidence and respect; strong leadership skills.
Strong marketing skills; the ability to identify potential markets, develop a comprehensive marketing plan, a desire to have part of oneâ™s compensation based on the ability to attract new clients and conference business.
Bachelorâ™s degree in business, marketing, or a related field.
At least five years in a leadership position in a university or college summer conferences and programs position.
Previous experience in employee training and development.
Previous supervisory experience.
Prior experience in conference sales, event services, or hotel/restaurant management.
Familiarity with software used in conference planning and implementation.
Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
$70,300.00 - $120,000.00 / AnnuallyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
