The Office of Residential Education, at Oberlin College, invites applications for the position of Interim Area Coordinator for Traditional Halls & Student Organizations. This is a full-time, limited term, Administrative and Professional Staff, live-in position reporting to the Director of Residential Education for Residential Curriculum & Training, ending June 30, 2023.
The Area Coordinator primarily supports the Office of Residential Education and provides secondary support to the Office of Conference Services. The Interim Area Coordinator is responsible for all programmatic and educational aspects within the assigned residence hall(s) and the promotion of programs and services that support students’ personal, social, and academic success. In addition, this position will work closely with the management team on continuous improvements for the office including but not limited to assessment projects, program development and maintaining best practices.
The Area Coordinator for Traditional Halls and Student Organizations will have responsibilities in the following areas:
Supervision and Advising · Directly supervise, mentor, and evaluate a Graduate Assistant Resident Coordinator or a Resident Liaison. · Directly supervise, mentor, and evaluate approximately 18 Resident Assistants. · Oversee approximately 500 residents. · Advise and provide guidance to cluster councils for assigned buildings. · Assist with student and professional staff hiring. Program Implementation and Development · Maintain high visibility with students in housing. · Identify and assess the needs of residents. · Provide building residential programming. · Maintain open communication with the SHARE Deans to assess the needs of individual students. · Support on-going assessment efforts concerning students and their experience at Oberlin College.
Administration · Participate in regular meetings within the Office of Residential Education and the Division of Student Life · Conduct weekly staff meetings · Facilitate the check-in, check-out, room inspections, and damage billing processes at the open and close of each semester. · Assist with the coordination of housing selection and assignments. · Advising, Counseling, and Crisis Management · Support students around social, academic, and personal concerns. · Advise and provide guidance to hall councils for assigned buildings. · Be knowledgeable of college resources and provide appropriate referrals. · Serve in the campus-wide on-call system rotation, responding directly to crisis situations as appropriate/required. · Maintain on-campus presence for cluster/community events.
Community Standards and Safety · Serve as a conduct hearing officer, educating residents about residential life and college policies. · Monitor the physical integrity of the space and report and follow-up on maintenance concerns. · Conduct weekly walk-throughs of assigned buildings · Oversee life safety inspections and complete necessary follow-up meetings. · Encourage self-discipline, self-government, and respect for individual rights among residents; · encourage individual assertiveness.
Special Projects · Plan and implement End of Semester and End of Year Appreciation Events · Coordinate Student Staff Recognition Program throughout the Academic Year Summer Conferences · Serve as a Conference Manager for the summer conference program, including participation in an on-call rotation and weekend shifts. · Provide general supervision of 14 student staff and manage the operation of the Conference Services Information Center. · Prepare housing and related facilities (e.g. meeting rooms, classrooms, lecture halls, etc.) for summer guests. · Oversee check-in and checkout procedures for conference groups. · Meet with the leaders of assigned groups to ensure that their needs are met in accordance with their contract. · Work with the Director of Conference Services to bill groups for services rendered. · Responsible for the management of one administrative process.
A bachelors degree with experience at a residential college or university or background experience in a related field (I.e., counseling, leadership, or program development) is required. Prior to employment, all candidates must pass a background check. All candidates should possess strong administrative skills and be committed to working with a diverse student population.
A Master’s degree is preferred.
