The Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is a dynamic, innovative structure at UC Berkeley that represents a once-in-a-generation transformation. The Division brings together faculty, researchers, staff, and students from computing, statistics, the humanities, and social and natural sciences, mirroring the cross-cutting nature of data science and redefining the research university for the digital age.
Core to the Division is a commitment to examining how the digital revolution affects equity and opportunity - and building the capacity to respond to these challenges. Formally established in July 2019, CDSS was created to meet the opportunities and demands of a world where data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence inform practice and policy in virtually every arena.
The Division connects the Data Science Undergraduate Studies program, School of Information, Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, Department of Statistics, the Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Berkeley D-Lab, Computational Precision Heath, and the Center for Computational Biology.
The Division is responsible for growing Berkeley's broad-based undergraduate programs in data science, computing, statistics and other interdisciplinary programs, including classes and programs serving thousands of undergraduate students a year. CDSS is currently going through the process to become a college and expects to be the first new college or school on the UC Berkeley campus in more than 50 years.

The Master of Machine Learning program management office is a developing unit within the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society and will be managed by the Executive Director for Educational Initiatives. The Master of Machine Learning will be an online self-supporting graduate professional degree program designed to train current software engineers and others with undergraduate degrees in computer science, data science, statistics, and related fields in the specialized techniques and knowledge required to become machine learning engineers. The MML program management office will oversee admissions, student affairs, career services, academic planning, curriculum development, marketing, and communications related to this new program.

35% Manages the design and development of the Master of Machine Learning program, or other related new educational initiatives as needed, and oversees execution of programs. Directs long-term planning for educational initiatives, overseeing program proposal development and review in collaboration with faculty members, and generating road maps for program progress.
10% Oversees the Director of MML Admissions, the Director of MML Student Affairs and Career Services, and the MML Marketing and Communications Assistant, ensuring excellent program management.
10% Plans, directs and controls MML program budget in collaboration with the Chief Administrative Officer of the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society.
10% Ensures the assessment and success of the MML program effectiveness, and recommends changes to the program's content, policies, and strategic goals as needed; develops the strategic direction of the program to ensure that it remains a high-quality degree and a revenue-generating initiative.
10% Develops ideas and options for developing, revising, updating, or changing the MML program and presents these ideas to the faculty Head Graduate Adviser and curriculum committee for the program for review.
10% Develops and implements the MML program content in coordination with evolving faculty research interests. Collaborates with faculty members to develop MML courses and curricula.
5% In collaboration with fundraising and development staff, develops and executes strategic plan for financing MML program activities and ensuring ongoing sustainability of the MML program; may identify and cultivate prospective new industrial partnerships and funding sources related to funding and program participation.
5% Convenes the MML program advisory committee, receives feedback, and determines adjustments to strategy accordingly. May represent the MML program to external governing boards or outside agencies as needed.
5% Ensures that synchronous and asynchronous course content for the MML program is developed in adherence to UC intellectual property policies; responsible for ensuring that IP agreements and contracts related to the MML program are properly negotiated and managed.
Academic or research background and recognized expertise in computing, data science, and/or higher education or related fields.
Expert oral and written communication skills.
Leadership experience in academic and / or government agencies.
Demonstrated expertise in building collaborations between academia, industry and / or governmental agencies.
Demonstrated expertise with program building within a leading academic institution and administrative, budgetary, human resources and financial principles and practices.
Expert ability to work with dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff and students.
Managerial experience and proven success in managing a complex academic program.
Strong negotiation skills and verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence / persuade all levels of academia.
Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple academic priorities.
Doctorate in related area and / or equivalent experience training.
Strong fundraising experience.

Salary is commensurate with experience. This is a 100% FTE career appointment.
