Violence Prevention Education and Advocacy Specialist
The Office of Health and Wellness Education is responsible for providing appropriate, evidence-based prevention and health promotion programming on topics including substance abuse, stress management, nutrition, healthy relationships and sexual health, sleep, mental health, violence prevention (including bystander intervention training), and interpersonal violence advocacy for Middlebury College students. Reporting to the Director, the Violence Prevention Education and Advocacy Specialist is responsible for developing, implementing, and evaluating a comprehensive continuum of evidence-based primary prevention strategies and advocacy services which reduce incidence of and outcomes related to interpersonal violence. Their work should contribute to a healthy campus community that actively encourages and supports all students to learn and grow academically, socially and emotionally through health promotion initiatives related to healthy relationships, effective communication, bystander action, and support for survivors. This position will support students at all of Middlebury's Schools and Programs around the world including undergraduate students, graduate students, and short-term program students of all ages. Additionally, all health educators in Health and Wellness Education will engage in relationship building, data disaggregation, and direct programming to address connections between culture, identiti(es), and social justice as determinants of health for groups of students who have been historically underrepresented or marginalized including but not limited to students of color, first generation students, and queer students.
The Violence Prevention and Advocacy Specialist is a twelve-month, full-time position. Supervision is provided by the Director of Health and Wellness Education. Health and Wellness Education provides services, support, and consultation as an anchor office for all of Middlebury's year-round, world-wide programs.
This is considered a full-time, salaried, benefits eligible position. The salary range for the position is $51,300 - $64,100 per year. Requirements
General Responsibilities: Contribute to the planning, development, and implementation of overall office programming, education/trainings, and outreach efforts around health and wellness topics of community relevance including, but not limited to substance use, stress management, nutrition, healthy relationships and sexual health, and sleep
Recommend, implement, and assess environmental management and community-level strategies to reduce interpersonal violence
In collaboration with the Director of Health and Wellness Education, coordinate the ongoing implementation of the Green Dot Violence Prevention Strategy for the undergraduate College, C.V. Starr Schools Abroad, Language Schools, Institute, and other Schools and Programs including facilitation of overviews and bystander trainings, preparation and distribution of booster materials, web-based course and training materials and the supervision of program interns and faculty and staff volunteer facilitators
Provide trainings, workshops, and group series on healthy relationship promotion topics for students and colleagues focused on setting boundaries, effective communication, and consent
Provide trainings, workshops, and group series on violence prevention for students and colleagues focused on bystander intervention, supporting survivors, promoting helping and referral behaviors
Coordinate guest speakers, workshops, events and film series to address violence prevention, sexual health and gender advocacy as well as health outcomes and skill building for specialized campus populations including the curation of Dating Violence and Sexual Violence Awareness and Prevention Months and Healthy Relationships Action Week.
Coordinate student advocate recruitment, selection, training, and on-going supervision of the crisis hotline including attending weekly meetings, providing one on one supervision of student advocates, and coordinating and serving as an administrator in an on-call rotation.
Coordinate summer student and professional staff advocacy services for Vermont and distance program students.
Develop educational programming, presentations, and materials for Residential Halls, student leaders, and classrooms and other campus environments as requested
Coordinate efforts to provide education for incoming students (first year, February admits, transfer, exchange, graduate, athletes, student leaders, international, study abroad, summer, and short-term programs) through live or video-conference orientation programs, information distribution and web-based education
Establish ongoing relationships with student organizations and specialized campus populations to coordinate programming and advise student groups engaged in violence prevention, advocacy, activism related to power-based personal violence
Enhance the capacity of faculty and staff stakeholders in the community as partners to develop strategies to address the varied impacts of interpersonal violence and the health impacts of institutional/structural oppression related to health outcomes across institutional offices including but not limited to the Center for Health and Wellness (Health Services, Counseling, Integrated Care, Sports Medicine and Health & Wellness Education), Student Engagement (Student Activities, Outdoor Programs, Community Standards, Club Sports), Dean of Students (Residential Life, Class Deans and First Year Experience, Education Equity Initiatives, Anderson Freeman Resource Center) and Department of Public Safety
Demonstrate and maintain professional boundaries in working with students and colleagues Collaborate with the Director to develop an end of the year report on accomplishments and recommendations for the program and campus/community program stakeholders including program planning, learning outcomes and program evaluation.
Represent the Office of Health and Wellness Education on committees and task forces as appointed/assigned on campus and in Addison County
Maintain and develop skills via participation in continuing education opportunities and membership in the American College Health Association (ACHA), New England Health Educators' Network (NEHEN), and attendance at the ACHA New England College Health Association (NECHA) affiliate annual meetings Develop and maintain professional relationships with counterparts at peer institutions including engagement in peer review processes

Education: Master's degree required in public health, health promotion, community health, social work, education, higher education administration or counseling, psychology, or related field. Preference for Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) or Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) and National Advocate Credentialing Program (NACP) Certified Advocate (CA) designation.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Candidates should possess strong leadership, organizational, and presentation skills; strong intervention skills one-on-one, in small groups, and large groups; strong technology skills (presentation software, word processing, social media); an ability to meet deadlines; handle multiple, complex, and abstract tasks; capacity for detail-oriented work; an ability to work independently as well as part of a team; an understanding of health promotion and behavior change theories; advanced training and skills in health promotion and prevention program delivery; demonstrated ability to identify and makes referrals to the network of campus and community services for students; training in motivational interviewing; ability to create social norms and marketing campaigns from community-level data; understanding of an oppression-based model of health promotion and violence prevention (and associated multicultural approaches to prevention); commitment to addressing intersections of multiple identities and their related health outcomes; proven record of successful work with college students, faculty, staff and community members from diverse cultural and educational backgrounds including socio-economic, racial/ethnic, international, first generation college students, and LGBTQ populations; and commitment to public health and social justice change models.
Additionally, candidates should possess advocacy or programmatic skills related to case management/coordination, civil/criminal justice systems, crisis intervention, trauma of victimization, victims' rights, and victims' compensation, preferably within the context of the state of Vermont and/or the willingness to apply previous experience and skills to the context of Vermont. Candidates who have not completed cris worker training in the state of Vermont will need to do so before or upon hiring.
Experience: At least two years of professional experience in college health promotion, prevention, or counseling; social work; student affairs administration; community health/mental health; leadership development and/or training and technical experience in aforementioned areas desired. Experience working in higher education/student affairs preferred. Unpaid or volunteer experience in these fields may be applied to the two year professional expectation but may not replace the professional experience entirely; candidates who wish to apply volunteer experience should demonstrate how their experience is equivalent to professional experience.
Ideal candidates would also bring experience in community needs assessments, program planning, logic model development, community-based evaluation methodologies (such as Empowerment Evaluation), and assessment; building, maintaining, and facilitating small group experiences and community-wide campaigns or programs; developing, facilitating, and coordinating professional development opportunities for adult learners; experience working in violence prevention, response, and advocacy with college-age students and adult learners of all ages; developing and editing educational and communication tools (web, print, social media); and peer education facilitation, training, and assessment.
Candidates with training experience and/or certification in the following programs/strategies are strongly preferred: Green Dot Violence Prevention Strategy (college and study abroad curriculum), other bystander intervention curricula for college students (e.g. Bringing in the Bystander, Step Up, etc.), crisis worker/advocate training, Brief Alcohol Screening and Interventions for College Students (BASICS), Koru Mindfulness for Emerging Adults, and Our Whole Lives or Planned Parenthood's sexuality education curriculum. Candidates should identify trainings and proficiencies in other similar or related curricula in application materials.

Physical Demands Regularly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery. Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time. Will need to regularly move about inside the office and will require regular cross-campus travel to access resources and personnel in other buildings. Will require periods of standing (or other postures) to deliver educational programming and/or facilitate groups. May require limited and infrequent in-state and out-of-state trips for trainings, professional meetings, and professional development.
