The Office of the General Counsel at Northeastern University seeks a full-time attorney to provide support for the University and its various colleges and departments in the areas of commercial contracting, business operations and general transactions. Responsibilities will include the review, drafting, negotiation, and enforcement of a variety of university contracts; and collaboration, advice and guidance across the University regarding the same.
Experience with contracting relating to any of the following is desirable: procurement, software, real estate, construction, finance, mergers and acquisitions, organizational operations, events, academic collaborations, library, research, clinical affiliations, and student affairs.
The successful candidate should have a demonstrated interest in and experience with transactional work, a desire to learn new areas of the law, excellent verbal and written communication skills, a commitment to ethics and integrity, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
The Assistant General Counsel will work closely with and accept direction from senior attorneys in the Office of General Counsel who specialize in contracts and transactions and be responsible for developing a portfolio of clients/contract areas.
J.D. from an accredited law school,
a strong academic and professional record, and
at least three (3) years of experience centered around transactional work including meaningful contract drafting, negotiation and review.
Member in good standing of the Massachusetts Bar or be eligible to waive into Massachusetts bar within six months of hire.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIES
Negotiate, draft, review and interpret a broad variety of contracts and other legal instruments memorializing the diverse activities of a large dynamic academic organization. Advise and guide university collaborators regarding the same. Supervise and work with outside counsel as necessary.
Contract Process 20%
Assist with the administration of contract processes for the university, and train, educate and communicate effectively with university community members regarding the same.
Remain updated on changes to federal, state and local laws, and funding agencies regulations and requirements.
Review, analyze and advise on applicable university policies; draft and/or update relevant university policies
Other matters as may be assigned from time to time.
