UMBC Transit provides extensive fixed route bus service to the UMBC campus and surrounding communities. Primary locations serviced include: Technology Research Center (TRC), UMBC South Campus - BWtech South, Freshmen satellite parking lot, BWI MARC/Amtrak train station, Halethorpe MARC train station, downtown Arbutus, Catonsville, Baltimore Inner Harbor and more. This service extends to weekends with additional access to Route 40 (Baltimore National Pike) business district (Wal-Mart, international grocery markets, various shopping centers) and Arundel Mills Mall.
Position Overview:
Reporting to the Associate Director of Transit in the Division of Student Affairs, the Safety & Training Manager will oversee UMBC Transit's Safety and Training Program for all drivers including new student bus operators, and provide programmatic instruction for the current driving staff to ensure consistent adherence to UMBC Transit policies and procedures.

Reporting to the Associate Director of Transit in the Division of Student Affairs, the incumbent will oversee UMBC Transit Safety and Training Programs for all drivers including new student bus operators and provide programmatic instruction for the current driving staff to ensure consistent adherence to UMBC Transit policies and procedures.
This position provides managerial leadership for all safety systems including risk management assessment, training and claims handling for the entire UMBC Transit program. The incumbent will be responsible for maintaining adequate staffing levels, ensuring sufficient training is provided and full compliance with all of UMBC Transit's policies as well as those from the United States Department of Transportation.
Specific duties include:
Participates in department meetings, leads safety briefs (instructions on safe driving behavior and best practices) and monthly safety meetings;
Goal setting, performance review and progressive disciplinary actions and staff development;
Assists in overall leadership for Transit operations;
Performs administrative tasks;
Tracks all training and driving records electronically for each bus operator;
Operates/assists transit routes and charters;
Maintains strong knowledge of FMCSA & MDOT policies and regulations; and
Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree required (may substitute experience for education)
Two years experience in the transit/transportation industry, preferably as a CDL trainer
Two years supervisory/management experience
Must be proficient with Microsoft Office and possess excellent customer service skills
Must be patient and have the ability to take control when necessary.
Candidate must have a Maryland Commercial Class B Driver’s License with Air Brake and Passenger Endorsement
Must possess the ability to perform and instruct on pre/post trip inspections, conduct accident investigations and safety audits
This position requires flexibility in a revolving work schedule, including some days, nights, and weekends in order to accommodate training, routes and other requirements.
Note: Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills and abilities required may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year or experience.
