Position Overview: | Reporting to the Director for Off-Campus Student Services, the Assistant Director of Commuter Student Success provides programmatic, strategic, operational and administrative oversight for commuter related programs and services. The position supervises Commuter Assistant student workers, conducts outreach, develops learning outcomes, oversees project management and creates and maintains student support services.

Responsibilities: | The Assistant Director identifies opportunities to improve the commuter student experience through the creation of standards, policies and long-range goals and objectives while co-leading internal budgetary management decisions, assessment of programming and services and using educated decision-making processes to achieve departmental and divisional goals. The incumbent will aid in building program support capacities, advising prospective and enrolled students about resources and opportunities for involvement and representing Off-Campus Student Services and the Division of Student Affairs on campus and within the surrounding community. The Assistant Director of Commuter Student Success reports to the Director and assumes responsibility of the department as needed. The Assistant Director understands the unique needs of commuter students and the ways those needs vary across race, gender, religion, age, socio-economic status and other identities. They use diversity, equity and inclusion lenses to develop intersectional programs, initiatives and outreach efforts that contribute to the overall sense of belonging for UMBC commuter students. The Assistant Director is also committed to contributing to an inclusive departmental culture for both students and staff. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Recruits, hires, trains and supervises paraprofessional student staff members to assist in accomplishing the goals of the department
- Assists the director in long-term planning, strategic alignment and management oversight of all student affairs-related commuter initiatives dedicated to recruitment, retention and sense of community.
- Collaborates with Admissions and Academic Affairs to connect incoming and current students with relevant resources to improve their likelihood of success
- Develops and manages departmental commuter-based retention programming initiatives
- Maintains oversight of specific commuter program-related expenditures
- Develops appropriate questionnaires, focus groups and other data collection methods with the intent of improving commuter programming and initiatives

Required Minimum Qualifications: | - Master’s Degree in Student Personnel Services, Education, Business Administration or another related field (degree must be conferred by the start date)
- One year of relevant student affairs experience
- Understanding of emerging issues in higher education, particularly in the area of commuting student needs
- Demonstrated intercultural competence, and a continuing commitment to advance equity, inclusion and social justice practices in support of a diverse community
- Demonstrated creativity in student programming
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work in a a highly collaborative team environment
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends as student programming needs and major events require

Preferred Qualifications: | -
Three to five years of relevant student affairs experience -
Experience as an undergraduate commuting student is preferred -
Experience with assessment and data-driven decision-making is preferred -
Experience in fast-paced environments is preferred |
