Student Unions & Activities is currently accepting applications for the position of Student Activities Advisor - Student Group Services. The position is responsible for supporting student development through advising registered student group leaders at the University of Minnesota. This Student Group Services Team position will specifically have responsibilities coordinating assigned Student Activities initiatives, implementing student group training initiatives, and serving as a liaison to registered student groups.
Other responsibilities will include ensuring student group compliance with University policies and permits, acting as an advisor and interpreter of policy to student groups and being a liaison to the University and its constituents. The position will report to the Program Manager, Student Group Services.
Important to Know: Flexible hybrid work expectation is to be in-person, on-campus 2 days per week.
General Duties and Responsibilities (20%) - Manage policy and compliance for areas as assigned as related to insurance, permits, tax information for student groups and programs plus formulates and interprets policies & practices. - Advise and consult with registered student groups on student group registration, policy and procedures, conflict resolution, problem solving, event planning and risk management. - Assist in the creation and development of student group policies and procedures related to assigned areas and assist with the student group registration process. - Work with colleagues in Student Unions & Activities to offer programs, resources, and services to support an inclusive and diverse University community. - Assist in Student Activities outreach and community-building efforts through presentations, tabling, and workshop facilitation. - Other duties and special projects as assigned.
Student Group Services Team position will be responsible for the following areas:
Student Group Advising (30%) - Manage difficult conversations around meeting the needs of multiple constituents keeping the goals of SUA, the University, and the student experience in the forefront of all decisions. - Serve as liaison to registered student groups to build relationships that provide more targeted support - Manage policy and compliance areas as assigned related to insurance, permits, tax information for student groups and programs. - Stay current on information in the field of student development and incorporate into student processes. - Develop procedures of consistent support for student group advisors, including annual meetings, regular communications, trainings, and online resources - Manage best practices and procedures for student group advisors to assist in student group success
Student Group Trainings (30%) - Create, implement, and evaluate training opportunities and process for student group development in areas such as organizational design, leadership, and group operations while considering a variety of delivery methods - Create, implement, and evaluate resources with the intent of informing student group advisors about student group policies and procedures - Evaluate existing training materials for student groups in areas such as event planning, recruitment, and branding - Work collaboratively with staff in other University departments to develop trainings and resources relevant to student groups associated with that department - Oversee the Student Group Leadership Program - Supervise student Trainings and Webinars Assistant
Campus Elections (10%) - Co-Supervise the Student Groups Initiatives Assistants who are responsible for implementation of the annual All Campus Election, all policies governing the student government elections rules and procedures for implementing the elections, and ballots for all campus and student group elections. - Assist student leaders in planning, forecasting, and monitoring annual funds for the operation of the Campus Elections program.
Supervision (10%) - Supervise and evaluate the Student Unions & Activities Trainings and Webinars Assistant who is responsible for timely creation of relevant student group resources, maintenance of the learning management system and hosting webinars. - Train Student Unions & Activities Trainings and Webinars Assistant on presentation skills, decision-making, problem-solving, managing confidential information, and developing autonomy.
Other Duties as Assigned
Required: - A Bachelor’s degree plus at least 4 years of related experience, or master's degree plus at least two years of related experience. - Experience participating in student groups or student programming. - Excellent organizational skills, experience communicating with a diverse audience. - Experience fostering an inclusive environment and appreciative of differences in the workplace. - Position requires some work on evenings and weekends.
Preferred: - Experience working with students and student groups in a college/university environment. - Knowledge of student development, event planning and programming. - Master’s degree in education, student development, student personnel or related academic areas. - Experience working with organization management software (Presence, Engage/Campus Labs). - Experience working with learning management system software (Canvas, Moodle, Adobe Captivate).
