Metropolitan State University, Minnesota's public, urban university, and recipient of the 2019 Insight Into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award is seeking to hire a Student Success Coordinator for American Indian Students. This is a full time, probationary position within the Multicultural, American Indian and Retention Services (MAIR)/ /Dean of Students/Student Success Division.

Develop and implement retention strategies to facilitate academic success of students with an emphasis on American Indian in order to support the mission of the university and aid in ongoing retention of our students
Provide support and advocacy for relevant students, within university processes and external processes as appropriate.
Monitor academic progress and refer to university resources where appropriate
Work closely with academic advisors and other advisors or support coordinators to collaborate and coordinate retention efforts. This includes utilizing and following up on early alert, regular check in appointments and walk-ins and participating in related meetings such as Advising Council.
Track contacts with students and provide relevant reports. Complete and submit appropriate reports to Dean of Students. This includes monthly contact and semester reports regarding progress of relevant students.
Recruit and counsel prospective students on the admissions policies and procedures for admission to Metropolitan State University with a focus on American Indian students on campus and at numerous community locations.
Recruiting prospective students includes, but is not limited to: defining students' needs/wants; explaining and interpreting Metro State programs, policies and procedures and enrollment options; encouraging applications and registrations.
Activities are carried out during early mornings, the regular workday, evenings and on weekends, and are done individually, electronically, by telephone, and in groups.
Collaborate with other departments to assist prospective and admitted students by maintaining up-to-date knowledge of external educational and community referral resources such as social, human, financial, and educational options, and maintaining a strong relationship with career services office and best practices.
Develop, lead and participate in student success and retention initiatives designed to improve retention of students.
Work closely with academic advisors and other advisors or support coordinators to collaborate and coordinate retention efforts.
Conduct outreach to relevant students through email, letter, phone, university events and other methods. This includes call campaigns or other tasks as directed and as appropriate. Conduct outreach to potential students at university and external community events.
Assess outcomes of activities and student involvement. Regularly report on these outcomes, identify gaps and recommend changes.
Manage an established territory of partner community colleges, universities, and local businesses and organizations where prospective students matriculating to Metro State and Minneapolis College can be served with priority on the American Indian community.
Programming and education related to relevant cultural groups and/or general multicultural needs to aid in retention of students
Develop, sponsor, organize and facilitate ongoing education and awareness opportunities. This includes, but is not limited to workshops, speakers, trainings and large events.
Collaborate with other coordinators or departments to provide ongoing education and awareness to university community.
Community Connections and Funding Opportunities
Seek out, initiate contact and development of relationships with university and external community resources relevant to American Indian students in order to ensure needed connections to aid in student retention.
Research, apply for and implement relevant grants and other supportive funding for relevant students. Collaborate with our university Foundation and other departments as needed to develop such proposals.
Student Club Co-Advisor
Serve as co-advisor or advisor to relevant student clubs as appropriate. Advising includes, but is not limited to, meeting regularly with officers and club, attending meetings and events, serving as resource person for club, orient new officers or members, interpret university polices, assist with planning, make appropriate referrals and assist with other supportive needs.
In the alternative, support programming and efforts of relevant student clubs.
Other duties as assigned.
The following qualifications are required of all applicants seeking consideration for this position. Only applicants whose resumes clearly demonstrate fulfillment of each of these minimum qualifications will be considered for the position:
Bachelor's degree plus two years of professional experience in a content – specific field or three years of professional experience in a content-specific field or an equivalent combination of post-secondary training, education and/or professional experience.
Knowledge of and experience developing programming for diverse populations, including diversity in terms of socio-economic status, cultural and other represented groups.
Knowledge of community and/or government resources as well as university and other policies to accomplish multiple work assignments and provide advice to students. Ability to develop and interpret relevant policies.
Ability to develop relationships with internal and community partners and develop rapport with individuals for which services are provided.
Ability to develop, plan, organize, administer and implement programming and multiple activities and implement assessment of work and recommend changes to current practices.
Effective oral and written communication skills and experience communication with diverse audiences. Ability to facilitate presentations.
Ability and interest in working collaboratively with other departments and services.
Ability to work a flexible schedule as the needs of campus and services dictate.
Two years of experience in higher education setting doing similar work with students; particularly post-traditional and diverse populations.
Knowledge of college/higher education experience and culture.
Ability to conduct research, recognize gaps in service and provide recommendations to the University.
Prior advocacy experience including previously completing 40 hours training.
Prior experience requesting and implementing state and federal grant programs.
Working Conditions: The coordinator will primarily work on the St. Paul Campus of Metropolitan State University. Work is conducted in an office setting and throughout the university. Work may also occur at other university locations. There will be periods of sedentary work as well as periods of interactive work.
Physical Requirements of the Job: This requires occasionally lifting such articles as file boxes and heavy hand tools or heavier materials with help from others and/or lifting and carrying light objects frequently. Even though the weights being lifted may only be a negligible amount, a job is in this category may require walking or standing to a significant degree or may involve sitting most of the time with a degree of pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

Salary: This is a Minnesota State University Association of Administrative and Service Faculty (MSUAASF) Range C position with a $43,785 (minimum) to $75,840 (maximum). Salary is commensurate with education and experience, and is determined by the collective bargaining agreement between Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (Minnesota State) and the MSUAASF organization.
