The Division of Student Success and Engagement is seeking a movement builder to innovate and expand engagement and leadership opportunities for Texas A&M San Antonio students. With a focus on retention, inclusion, and equity, the Assistant Dean of Students for the Cisneros Institute of Emerging Leaders (ADOS-CI) nurtures, grows, and leads programs that support and empower students. The ideal candidate will excel at building authentic relationships, designing effective engagement and leadership programs, and seeking to engage the campus and broader San Antonio communities.
The ADOS-CI provides visionary and operational leadership for a vibrant and inclusive co-curricular programs and services that supports studentsâ™ growth and development to leave connected to campus and prepared to change their communities. The ADOS-CI is responsible for creating, implementing, and assessing a robust student life and student experience through campus activities and events, engagement and enrichment programs, and student leadership development. In addition, the ADOS-CI ensures all students find a sense of belonging and connection to A&M San Antonio beyond the classroom.
Additionally, the ADOS-CI is responsible for external engagement, providing a public presence of the institution as a viable leadership training entity for current students as well as community members. In addition, this individual will provide opportunity for to facilitate partnerships, collaborations, and research as it relates to thought leadership and social change. The position reports to the Associate Vice President and Dean of Students.
About the Cisneros Institute for Emerging Leadership
In August 2018, the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents approved the establishment of theÂ Henry G. Cisneros Institute for Emerging LeadersÂ at Texas A&M-San Antonio (A&M-SA). Named in honor of the Honorable Henry G. Cisneros and in recognition of his lead gift of $1 million, the Cisneros Institute will serve as an incubator of leadership talent.
Vision for the Institute Texas A&M University-San Antonio has forged a vision for an institute that will develop graduates who are skilled in taking initiative, building and cultivating effective teams, managing group dynamics, making ethical decisions, leading change in complex environments and dealing with organizational challenges. These emerging leaders will strengthen the local communities and beyond by effecting social and economic change. Students participating in programs will be well prepared to solve some of our regionâ™s most pressing problems.
Provide strategic operational oversight, and supervision of all aspects of the departments of Campus Life (Student Organizations, Programming Board, Student Government Association, Greek Life, major campus events and traditions), Student Engagement (New Student Orientation/ Engagement, Transfer Student Engagement, and Family Engagement), and Student Leadership programs (Presidentâ™s Leadership Class, Lopez Scholars, Texas Scholars, Clifton Strengths);
Responsible for the development and implementation of programs and services that are inclusive and support a diverse student body;
Ensure that all direct and indirect Cisneros Institute programmatic efforts align with the mission and goals of A&M San Antonio, Student Success and Engagement, and the institute itself;
Directing and executing major, large-scale programs and campus-wide events as needed;
Strengthen campus commitment to Clifton Strengths through programming, leadership development, and engagement activities;
Regularly assess the impact of the instituteâ™s efforts on student engagement, equity/inclusion, and leadership;
Serve as a responsible fiscal agent while managing department and student groups/organizations budgets, allocating resources appropriately, and spending appropriately;
Cultivate opportunities for collaboration and partnerships with other departments and community members to impact the full, holistic, student experience;
Provide leadership, mentoring, and oversight of the Student Government Associate Association (SGA).
Cultivate leadership development opportunities for students across all campuses;
Develop, implement, and direct student life programming to support various student populations (i.e., Latinx Students, Minority/Historically Underserved Students, First Generation Students, Military-Affiliated Students, LGBTQ Students, etc.).
Commitment to work with culturally diverse students and campus, including those with different levels of academic preparation and varying physical and learning abilities, and socioeconomic levels;
Demonstrate a positive and proactive approach in identifying problems, creating innovative solutions, and managing projects;
Demonstrate personal and professional integrity, which communicates a sense of mission, leadership, and ability to self-start;
Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Experience and Education:
Master's degree in Leadership or related field;
Five (5) years of experience in a college or university setting
Preferred Experience and Education
Ph.D. or Ed.D. or terminal degree preferred
Ten (10) years of administrative experience in higher education, preferably in a leadership role within Student Affairs, business-related or non-profit fields
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Expert knowledge of student development theories, co-curricular development, learning outcomes and ability to lead assessment;
Demonstrated technical expertise in the field of student leadership development and the integration with student success and retention;
Demonstrated policy development, compliance training, and supervision of professional and student staff;
Strong skills in decision making, communication, interpersonal and intercultural relation.Â Ability to collaborate and work effectively with individuals from different viewpoints and backgrounds in daily work activity;
Ability to monitor and assess the effectiveness of programs and recommend modifications as necessary;
Strong organizational and time management skills, and the ability to gather and analyze date, develop reports, multi-task, take initiative, prioritize, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment;
Project management skills including demonstrated skills in managing multiple projects and programs;
Proven ability to balance the strategic needs of the program with tactical day-to-day activities.
This position requires the ability to work evenings and weekend hours as business need dictates.
