UMBC is seeking an Academic Advocate Specialist. Under the leadership of the Associate Vice Provost and Assistant Dean, Undergraduate Academic Affairs, and serving in the Academic Success Center, the primary purpose of the position is to improve undergraduate student persistence/retention, progression and completion in support of key strategic university goals and measures, including enhancements to the IPEDS first-year retention rate and the 4-year and 6-year graduation rates.
Specific responsibilities include:
Serves as the case manager for a specific cohort of undergraduate students; develops and implements effective strategies and early outreach plans to enhance persistence and completion of students; and responds to student referrals and researches student cases referred to the Academic Success Center. Collaborates with academic Colleges and non-academic departments to provide information on and targeted intervention strategies for students identified as "at-risk" of not persisting or completing.
Resolves individual student issues that involve coordination between multiple offices at the university; assists students with understanding institutional policy and petitions processes, reviewing available options and resolving issues; and maintains student files, facilitates updates to student academic records, submitted petitions and monitors progress of students to ensure ongoing satisfaction and successful persistence.
Uses analytical and evidence-based decision-making skills to develop and interpret reports, analyze and understand trends and create actionable information drawn from multiple sources to inform outreach plans, enhance persistence and completion programs and focus efforts on student populations where greatest needs exist.
Monitors and makes recommendations for changes in academic policy, petition procedures and processes related to enhancing undergraduate student first year persistence, retention and completion across the campus community; leads ad-hoc teams or groups in undertaking coordinated efforts across colleges and units; and assesses and makes recommendations for improvements to enhance the effectiveness of persistence and completion programs across the university.
Serves as a liaison and resource for the university on all academic information related to retention and communicates academic requirements to students, faculty, staff and various publics; presents at meetings, workshops and other venues of internal and external audiences to disseminate and enhance UMBC's retention strategies; and conducts professional development sessions, workshops and trainings for staff, advisors and students addressing areas where misinformation or new information causes issues with persistence.
Other assigned duties as it pertains to specific cohort responsibilities.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
This position requires a Bachelor's Degree with a minimum of three years of experience working with students in a higher education setting or a Master’s Degree with a minimum of one year of experience working with students in a higher education setting.
Preferred candidates will also have demonstrated experience or knowledge in retention as well as in student completion/graduation efforts. Preferred candidates will have participated with a regionally or nationally recognized professional organization and will have research and/or publications focused on retention, student success, or related areas.
