Reporting to the Associate Director of Admissions, the Admissions Counselor is responsible for supporting the Office of Admissions in identifying, attracting and enrolling an academically talented and diverse student body. The Admissions Counselor plays a number of key support and organizational roles related to all aspects of the admissions process, from recruitment and outreach to yield to data analysis. The Admissions Counselor acts as the College's representative for all aspects of the admissions operation both on and off-campus. The Admissions Counselor also has significant responsibility planning and leading various on-campus, regional, and virtual events that support recruitment and yield efforts, and in managing or co-managing groups of student workers.
This is considered a full-time salaried benefits eligible position. This is a term-limited appointment from 7/1/2022 - 5/30/2024. The salary range for the position is $40,000 - $58,100 per year. Requirements Essential Functions: Represent the College virtually and in-person at high school visits, college fairs, on and off-campus events and other recruiting activities. Make presentations to large groups within the office, while traveling, and in virtual spaces. Evaluate admissions applications and participate equally in committee deliberations and decisions for first year and transfer students. Manage or help manage one or more programs or activities in the office, i.e., tour guides, visit programs, communications, the alumni admissions program, DEI work, liaison to other offices on campus, etc. Manage one or more geographically-designated recruitment territories. This work includes: serving as the primary Admissions contact for students, families, and school and CBO colleagues in that region; independent organization and execution of travel to that region; analyzing applicant and demographic data and utilizing that data in devising recruitment plans; and shepherding applications through rounds of initial evaluation and committee discussion. Advise school and CBO counselors regarding candidate applications. Respond to candidates' questions in a timely manner and helps explain admissions procedures. Provide service and information to alumni chairpersons and volunteers assisting in the admissions process. Help to select students to be admitted from the waiting list and contact them upon admission to the College. Plan on-campus, regional, and virtual events that help to inform prospective students about the College and attract admitted students to enroll. Collaborate frequently with other offices on campus and with admissions colleagues at peer schools in planning events. Identify and establish relationships with schools, CBOs, and other community organizations that will increase the College's efforts at expanding Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion work. General Responsibilities: Carry out other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree required. Relevant work experience in college admissions, counseling or student affairs area preferred. Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Familiarity with Middlebury College required. Recent Middlebury graduate preferred. Strong cross-cultural, interpersonal and writing skills are necessary, including public speaking skills and the ability to present the College in a positive way to diverse populations. Strong organizational skills, attention to details and ability to manage multiple projects concurrently. Strong systems and technology/computer capabilities. Ability to work collegially and collaboratively. Valid driver's license required. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as in a team setting. Evening and weekend work is routine during busier seasons. Experience: No previous admissions experience required. Comparable work experience is helpful, with experience in a college admissions or college counseling office, education-related community organization, or high school setting preferred. Physical Demands: Sitting and operating a computer for extended periods of time, particularly during application reading season. Ability to work in a wide variety of conditions and environments depending on the time of year: the office; schools, hotels, and homes while on the road; and occasionally from home. Light physical activity is often required: moving tables and chairs, carrying materials on the road, lifting small boxes. Extensive travel required, including in inclement weather.
