Educate students and families about the college admissions process and provide a supportive environment to reduce anxiety
Help students relate their abilities, aptitudes and interests to current and future educational and occupational choices
Helps students set realistic goals, develop decision-making skills and accountability
Keep abreast of issues and trends in college admission and higher education, including attending professional conferences, maintaining membership in SACAC, NACAC, ACCIS and College Board and visiting colleges
Maintain up to date records and work effectively with Naviance software
Create and deliver multiple workshops throughout the school year such as parent nights, financial aid presentations and the S4 speaker series
Works with a wide range of students such as international students, student-athletes, artists, students with learning differences and exceptionally high-achieving students
Engage in the broader life of the school by leading activities, athletic coaching, managing clubs and/or service groups and be an advisor
Create a whole school presence for College Counseling through attendance at school events.
Evaluate programs of study to meet the expectations of top colleges
Effectively use time to meet with students individually, in groups, and with families including some nights and weekends
Provide scholarship information to families
Meet the ethical standards as articulated by the National Association for College Admissions Counseling.
Specific Responsibilities
Counsel 30-35 students in both 11th and 12th grade focusing on the best institutions for each students individual needs and aspirations
Work with 9th and 10th grade students and their families to introduce college counseling and career exploration topics
Write a recommendation for each students and advocate appropriately on their behalf throughout the process
Meet with all visiting representatives
Assist in various transition programs between divisions and from high school to college
Participates in the BAIS college fair planning committee and agree to plan and host the Bay Area Case Studies Program on a rotation with other schools.
Work with teachers and students to develop essay writing skills
Help students develop interview skills
Prepare and edit college planning publications

Review admissions applications paying particular attention to transcript evaluation for SSES applicants.

The ideal candidate for this position will have experience working in a college admission office as well as familiarity with independent high schools. In addition, the candidate will have the requisite skills to successfully guide adolescents and their parents through the college application process.
Bachelor’s degree required
3-5 years experience in college admissions
Counseling experience at the high school level, preferably in an independent school
Well-developed organizational and time management skills
Proficient in the use of technology - especially Naviance
Adept at working with adolescents
Professional and patient while working with students, parents and colleagues.
Willingness to work as part of a team
Knowledge of a range of institutions and their admissions practices
Strong interpersonal skills to builds and maintain professional relationships with colleges
Excellent writing skills and the ability to advocate for students through recommendation letters
Experience with a wide range of students - international students, student athletes, artists, students with learning differences, and exceptionally high achieving students
Desire to engage in the broader life of the school by leading activities, athletic coaching, managing clubs and/or service groups, and serving on academic committees.
