The Statistics Undergraduate Academic Advisor is an integral member of the Statistics Student Services Team, which supports and provides high-quality, professional, and impactful services, programs, and resources for students. This position serves as one of two primary advisors for Statistics undergraduate students from enrollment through graduation. Responsibilities include providing a broad range of administrative and programmatic assistance to the Statistics Undergraduate Advising Coordinator, Undergraduate Program Director, faculty, and staff. The advisor is the initial point of contact for undergraduate students and campus units regarding undergraduate Statistics students.
This successful candidate must provide accurate and timely academic advising (via in-person appointments, email, phone, and virtual meetings) on curriculum, academic programming, resources, policies, and procedures.
About UM Statistics - The Department of Statistics at the University of Michigan is a growing department with three majors, three master’s programs, and a Ph.D. program. Our administrative and student services teams work closely together and value collaboration, hard work, and fun.
Academic Advising:
- Hold in-person and virtual one-on-one advising appointments and open advising for undergraduate students, including undergraduate AMDP students, advising them on long-term course planning, registration questions, and graduation procedures; processing major and minor releases.
- Contribute to student learning, development, and enhanced educational experiences through advising, coaching, interactive programming, and outreach efforts with students at all phases of their academic careers
- Provide students and faculty with information regarding policies, procedures, resources, and opportunities
- Provide appropriate student referrals to other campus units if assistance is needed beyond departmental advising.
Student Administrative Support:
- Provide administrative support: coordinate waitlist/override process for undergraduate courses; oversee departmental advising calendar; assist with grades and syllabus needs
- Manage honors and awards process
- Support Director of Undergraduate Programs and staff; liaise with faculty advisors and program coordinator for Applied Statistics AMDP
- Collect periodic feedback from students and provide details to the administration
- Liaise with appropriate campus offices (i.e., Auditors, Advising, etc.)
- Maintain accurate records and enrollment/student data following FERPA
- Review and maintain accurate information on departmental undergraduate program websites
- Contribute to planning and execution of departmental events (i.e., Career Fair, Major/Minor Expo, Graduation)
Departmental Administrative Support:
- Provide high-quality academic support service to faculty, staff, and other visitors
- Answer phones, respond to e-mail and in-person inquiries about programs, courses, and services promptly; provide reception support to Undergrad Student Services Assistant.
- Engage in basic data management and reporting via MPathways and other University systems
- Assist in ensuring a welcoming, positive, and professional environment
- May perform other responsibilities as assigned
- Participate in pertinent development, training and workshop opportunities to increase knowledge base, enhance skills, and keep current on changes relative to the role.
- Associates degree or equivalent education & experience
- Experience with academic student services and/or related administrative services
- Exceptional communication skills both verbal and written
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent education & experience
- Relevant experience with students in an advising setting
- Experience within higher education
