The College of Engineering, Center for Entrepreneurship at the University of Michigan invites applicants for a part-time LEO Intermittent Lecturer position for the Fall 2022 term.

The Center for Entrepreneurship’s courses are the epitome of experiential learning, demonstrative of entrepreneurial mindset, and open to all U-M students across all 19 schools/colleges.
The person in this position will be responsible for teaching ENTR 390.008 Lab: Hardware/Coding/Internet of Things during the Fall 2022 term. This lab section is an integral part of the CFE’s hands-on Introduction to Entrepreneurial Design experiential course suite: (https://cfe.umich.edu/project/intro-to-entrepreneurial-design/)
Introduction to Entrepreneurial Design is a cross-disciplinary, foundational course with choice of one lab for students who want to dive in and gain hands-on experience in designing and building physical and digital prototypes. The overall focus of the course is on learning to hack things together and experience the fun of building within the context of entrepreneurship and design.
At the forefront of Introduction to Entrepreneurial Design are its project-based lab sections, in three concentration areas:
- Hardware/Coding/IoT
- 3D Printing and Prototyping
- Virtual and Augmented Reality
Each prototyping lab is supplemented by a combined weekly lecture session, where students from all labs come together to learn the principles of design, entrepreneurship, innovation, sustainability and commercialization. This course was designed for current and potential entrepreneurs, designers, hackers, makers, founders, and doers.
The objective of the Hardware/Coding/IoT lab section is to help students develop working knowledge of and hands-on, practical experience enabling basic and new capabilities of connected devices, designing and coding apps for mobile devices or voice AI, and controlling interactions for the Internet of Things.
The Hardware/Coding/IoT instructor will lead a weekly 3 hr, experiential lab that teaches functional device/app programming to undergraduate students. Course faculty will teach enrolled students to:
- identify resources for independent problem solving
- develop a basic understanding of coding and electronics
- apply a variety of methods for documenting and communicating the progress of their designs
- create functional prototypes, and engage in the design process
- employ an iterative design approach, integrating concepts from the lecture to develop a final project
The course is scheduled for 15 weeks during the Fall 2022 term. The lab instructor will be responsible for preparing course materials, actively teaching in-person, holding office hours weekly, managing milestones for and grading student projects, engaging in regular and collaborative meetings in coordination with the the other two lab instructors plus general Intro to Entrepreneurial Design course instructor, and, attending the CFE’s monthly Faculty Community Meetings.
- Graduate degree in a relevant field
- Experience with hardware and software programming, embedded computing devices and AI technology
- Strong communication skills, including oral and visual presentations
- Ability to learn conceptual frameworks quickly and apply them to practical student needs; designing and preparing active-learning lessons
- Demonstrated ability to teach students and work effectively in a classroom environment, including the ability to establish credibility and rapport with students
- Steadfast attention to detail and accuracy, in a timely and responsive manner
- Advanced degree (PhD) in a relevant field
- Experience in makerspace education and/or endeavors
- Leadership in a multi-disciplinary team-based environment
- Experience in entrepreneurship (startups or early stage), or intrapreneurship within a larger organization, or commercializing
- Experience with Learning Management Systems (e.g. Canvas)
This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between the U-M and the Lecturers Employee Organization, AFL-CIO, which contains and settles all matters with respect to wages, benefits, hours and other terms and conditions of employment.
