The Highlights This position is designed to provide a holistic, integrated, institutional approach to substance use/misuse at DePaul University, ensuring compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act. The position serves as the lead on educational efforts pertaining to substance use/misuse including program development, messaging, policy development, intervention strategies and assessment. This position provides holistic individual support, resources and education to members of the DePaul community around these issues as well as other health and wellness issues such as sexual and relationship violence, stress, mental health and eating disorders.
Is This You? - Provides holistic support, advocacy and intervention to members of the DePaul community as it relates to alcohol and substance misuse.
- Utilizes Brief Alcohol Screening and Intervention for College Students (BASICS) and other Brief counseling interventions (CHOICES) for DePaul students who are found in violation of the Student Code of Responsibility related to substances or otherwise referred from a university partner.
- Identifies and makes appropriate referrals for students in need of community resources such as meetings or in/outpatient treatment for substance use disorders.
- Provides consultation to faculty, staff, parents and other students seeking information as to how best to assist a student struggling with substance misuse.
- Creates and maintains a database as well as relationships with alcohol and drug treatment facilities and 12-step programs in Chicago.
- Coordinates and oversees DePaul's weekly Collegiate Recovery Community meetings and other related events.
- Coordinates assessment efforts related to substance use/misuse at DePaul, including target populations such as adult students, residential students, commuter students, student athletes, fraternity and sorority members, students of color and LGBTQ students.
- Conceptualizes, implements and documents assessment projects aimed at understanding alcohol and substance use/misuse on campus, as well as changes in use/misuse over time.
- Assists in the facilitation of the National College Health Assessment (NCHA) and Core Alcohol and Drug Survey.
- Assists in presenting findings to multiple campus stakeholders including administration, students, faculty and staff.
- Ensures DePaul's compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act.
- Coordinates the delivery of the annual notification letter to students and employees about DePaul's alcohol and other substance policies.
- Writes the Biennial Review every two years as mandated by law; collaborates with campus partners to ensure the integrity of this document.
- Ensures compliance with programming and messaging campaign mandates.
- Coordinates university-wide Biennial Review working group.
- Stays informed about any changes in federal, state and local laws which pertain to alcohol and other substance related issues and which may impact compliance with the Drug Free Schools and Communities Act.
- Leads the university's alcohol and substance abuse prevention programming, as well as related communication campaigns.
- Trains peer health educators on harm reduction, addiction, recovery, substance use disorders and other related content.
- Provides oversight and consultation for peer health educators' substance use/misuse prevention programming.
- Uses current, relevant data to develop and implement educational programming and learning opportunities which promote personal health and well-being across the institution for students, faculty and staff.
- Continues to develop, enhance and sustain DePaul's Collegiate Recovery Program.
- Assists with developing, enhancing and sustaining DePaul's Opioid Overdose Reversal Program.
- Uses current, relevant data to develop and implement harm reduction and other relevant messaging campaigns across the institution.
- Serves on university health and wellness committees, task forces and other initiatives.
- Provides holistic support, advocacy and intervention to members of the DePaul community as it relates to other health and wellness issues such as sexual and relationship violence, stress, mental health and eating disorders.
- Responds to incidents of sexual assault and serves as an advocate for students who have experienced sexual assault or relationship violence including making appropriate on and off campus referrals and understanding Title IX reporting and related university processes.
- Completes 40 hour Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention Training and 40 Hour Domestic Violence training.
- Provides holistic support and resources for students on a variety of issues including stress, mental health and eating disorders including making the appropriate on and off campus referrals.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Your Education - Master's Degree in Student Affairs, Higher Education, College Student Personnel, Counseling, Public Health or related field.
- 3 to 5 years of professional experience required in counseling, education, community health, public health or related field.
- 2 years of relevant graduate experience will equate to 1 year of professional experience.
Preferred Requirements - Illinois license in Counseling or Social Work and/or Certified Alcohol Drug Counselor.
Managerial Responsibilities - Reports to the Director of Health Promotion and Wellness for major programming and financial decisions but has direct input into decisions related to alcohol and substance abuse prevention and support.
Other Skills & Abilities Required - Strong computer skills.
- Experience working with Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel and Microsoft Word.
