Position Summary:
The UCI School of Humanities is home to 22 majors and 39 minors that span global cultural and historical studies; languages, literature and media; human dimensions of science and technology; and philosophy and critical theory. The School is comprised of 13 academic departments and several research centers. The Office of Undergraduate Study (OUS), housed in the School of Humanities, is comprised of a dynamic team of academic advisors dedicated to providing outstanding guidance and support to approximately 2,000 undergraduate students pursuing Humanities majors. The OUS team provides academic advising and administrative services to majors and prospective majors, coordinates and delivers new student advising, certifies degrees upon completion of all requirements, and oversees specific programs within the School such as the Humanities Mentor Program, Humanities Honors Program, and Humanities House. The Assistant Director is a part of the academic counseling and management team for the Humanities Office of Undergraduate Study. The incumbent collaborates with the Director on the development and implementation of overall department goals, supports the Director in dealing with daily troubleshooting needs within the office, and oversees the office in the absence of the Director. The Assistant Director works in conjunction with the Director, the Associate Dean of Curriculum and Student Services, Department Chairs and Managers, and Humanities faculty on the development and revision of undergraduate curriculum. The incumbent is further responsible for curricular articulation with California Community Colleges; management and oversight of the course scheduling process; and has primary responsibility for selecting, training and supervising peer academic advisors (PAAs).
Applies advanced academic advising concepts and experience, addresses the most difficult problems in academic advising, and develops solutions to these problems. Recognized as having advanced, specialized expertise for the department / college / school and / or has programmatic responsibility for a small, complex student affairs function that usually has a discrete budget or budgets, has impact beyond the unit, and involves establishing strategic goals. Is expected to identify systemic problems and issues, and propose solutions to department / college / school management on changes to department policy and procedures. Provides advice and counsel on academic advising issues to other, experienced academic advisors.
Compensation Range:
$64,400 - $89,300

3-5 years of academic advising experience and 3-5 years of academic program management experience.
B.A. degree in related field or equivalent combination of education and experience with 3-5 years of experience related to this position.
Thorough knowledge of department / college / school precedents and application of policy. Abilities in problem identification, reasoning, and ability to develop original ideas to solve problems. Thorough knowledge of college / school policies, procedures, and requirements. Ability to multi-task. Skills in judgment and decision-making, problem solving, project management. Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques. Knowledge of multiple majors, colleges, and schools.
Preferred:
Working knowledge of Degreeworks, Course Inventory Management, and eSOC. Skill to interact in a professional and tactful manner with people of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds. Organizational skills to prioritize workload and meet needs and deadlines in an environment with frequent interruptions. Application of skills necessary to synthesize information from a wide variety of sources into a coherent whole. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to make group presentations. Master's degree (MS/MA) in related field (e.g. Education, Humanities, Counseling) or equivalent experience with at least 3 - 5 years of experience.
