The Office of Development and Alumni Relations is seeking an energetic, enthusiastic, and highly organized Associate Director of Alumni Relations to develop and implement a strategy for the continued growth of an active and vibrant alumni relations program that will engage alumni with the School throughout their lifetimes while helping to advance the School's priorities in meaningful ways.
This position is vital to the success of JHSON alumni relations and encouraging philanthropy to the School. Reporting to the Director of Constituent Engagement, this position will lead the execution of all JHSON alumni relations activities with implementation of projects, specifically related to alumni engagement, mentorship opportunities, events, and alumni/constituent communications. This position will also support the engagement of alumni volunteer leaders on the Johns Hopkins Nurses' Alumni Association and the building of the alumni volunteer pipeline.
The Associate Director of Alumni Relations will manage all day-to-day activities of the School of Nursing's alumni programs and engagement opportunities, serving as the liaison with the Johns Hopkins University's central Alumni Relations Office and coordinating the alumni activities of the SON with University wide alumni programs and services.
Primary Responsibilities
Program Management (60%):
- Work with alumni and staff partners to identify, develop, and implement strategic alumni programming which strengthens alumni connections between alumni and the university, students, and other alumni. This includes creating concepts, leading implementation, assessing timelines, creating correspondence, analyzing and reporting status, and identifying solutions to barriers that may exist. Events and programming are offered both virtual and in-person.
- Play an integral role in the planning and execution of major annual alumni events including fall alumni programming (Alumni Weekend – September 29-30, 2022) and spring alumni programing (Reunion Weekend – June 1-3, 2023). Must be available for these dates.
- Increase engagement of recent graduates through reimagining of traditional alumni weekend programming.
- In partnership with colleagues across the School, lead the planning of and execution of events and programs that connect alumni to students. These include but are not limited to mentorship opportunities through the University-wide platform, OneHop, virtual mentoring meet-ups, precepting opportunities, and career lab volunteer opportunities such as mock interviews and career panels.
- Grow School of Nursing presence in University-wide events through collaboration with colleagues in the Johns Hopkins University Office of Alumni Relations and identification of alumni nurse leaders and experts to feature in events.
- Expand and create new alumni programming to include engagement opportunities that are interest-based (i.e. Palliative Care, Pediatrics, Public Health, etc.) and identity-based (i.e. Black Student Nurses Association, Asian Pacific American Nurses Association, LGBTQ+, etc.)
- In partnership with the Director of Constituent Engagement, work with SON administration to ensure an alumni relations presence at SON led events, such as but not limited to SON Orientation, Commencement, Nurses Week, and White Coat ceremonies.
- Serve as an alumni relations divisional representative in University-wide alumni relations.
Volunteer & Relationship Management (20%):
- In partnership with the Director of Constituent Engagement, manage alumni volunteers on the Johns Hopkins Nurses' Alumni Association (JHNAA) and support the execution of JHNAA projects or initiatives, planning of association meetings and annual business meeting, committee work, and correspondence with members. Advise the board, aligning JHNAA and JHSON strategic priorities.
- Work closely with the Alan M. Chesney Medical Archives and the JHNAA board to preserve the legacy of Johns Hopkins School of Nursing and the Church Home & Hospital Nurse Training School (alumni history, artifacts).
- Support the development of an alumni volunteer pipeline.
- Track alumni volunteer involvement and program success using the DAR CRM. Develop a system/process for identifying, recruiting, and tracking alumni volunteers.
- Build and cultivate productive relationships with a wide range of colleagues and departments across the university including other Central Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) units, Divisional colleagues, Alumni Council, Student Affairs, Career Lab, academic programs, and other offices as appropriate to leverage new opportunities to connect alumni to the University and to each other.
Marketing and Communication (10%):
- Coordinate communications to support and strengthen alumni engagement both internally and externally including Vigilando alumni section in bi-yearly Nursing magazine, bi-monthly alumni newsletter, alumni/donor mailings, social media campaigns, alumni collateral and more.
- In partnership with marketing and communications, leverage alumni stories, accomplishments, and opportunities across school-wide communication platforms.
- Maintain alumni website pages and event registration forms.
- Manage incoming alumni relations calls pertaining to the School of Nursing alumni programs and JHNAA. Monitor and respond to requests from alumni for research, service, and/or information that are sent to JHNAA email inbox.
Reporting (10%):
- Analyze and report alumni relations metrics to demonstrate progress on alumni engagement.
- Support strategies to ensure accurate alumni records and maintain alumni data in DAR CRM.
- Prepare Dean's Briefings for alumni events and programing involving the Dean.
- Explore ways to measure how alumni engagement leads to philanthropy.
- Identify ways to capture alumni data in support of JHSON strategic initiatives and priorities.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required.
- Three years related experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Five years related experience in development and alumni relations, student admissions, fundraising or comparable and relevant experience in a nonprofit or private sector institution strongly preferred.
- Proven management and organizational skills; demonstrated ability to manage many projects simultaneously involving alumni volunteers.
- Great interpersonal skills with the ability to motivate and persuade others.
- Ability to maintain positive and collaborative relationships, be responsive, communicate and work effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Self–starter with enthusiastic, excellent communication skills (oral and written, including public speaking) ability to work as part of a team (staff and volunteers) and to work independently. Must be adept at working effectively with diverse constituent groups and senior institutional staff and have a proven record of building programs and motivating volunteers.

Technical Skills:
