Salary range: Commensurate with qualifications and experience and the particular courses the lecturer is appointed to teach. Compensation for Summer Session courses may vary from courses taught during the academic year.
Percent time: Variable, based on the course load assigned.
Anticipated start: Appointments are contingent on the hiring units instructional need and the availability of funding. This recruitment is valid for initial appointments made in spring quarter 2022 through spring quarter 2023. Initial appointments with effective dates outside of this recruitment period will require an alternative open recruitment.
Position duration: Appointments are typically made during one or more quarters of the regular academic year (fall, winter, and spring quarters), but they may also be made during Summer Session.

Position Description Kresge College at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) invites applications for an ongoing pool of lecturers to teach sections of
College 1, the first course of UCSCs Academic Literacy Curriculum.
College 1 is a required core course designed to help students develop academic and civic proficiency in reading and critical thinking. Students will develop understanding of 'academic ethos' and habits of mind and practice that are tied to a sense of belonging and academic success. This course prepares students for success in other UCSC courses. There is no placement exam for
College 1; enrollment in this course is not tracked by proficiency in reading, writing, or critical thinking.
Instructors meet with a seminar of about thirty students two or three times per week and present material from an established syllabus; assign and evaluate student work; meet with students in small groups; prepare grades, which may include narrative evaluations of student performance; hold weekly office hours; and carry out other typical instructional duties.
Students in
Kresge College 1 Academic Literacy and Ethos: Power and Representation examine contemporary nonfiction and creative work in varied media that reflect social and institutional practices related to power and representation. Readings focus on individuals and communities struggles to represent and constitute themselves in the United States.
Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply:
- Ph.D. (or equivalent foreign degree) .
- Demonstrated record of working effectively with students from a wide range of social, cultural, and academic backgrounds.
- Familiarity with current theory and research in academic literacy and discourse pedagogy, or related topics.
- Research or teaching experience in visual or aural culture, the arts, literature, performance studies, or media studies.

- Master's degree (or equivalent foreign degree); or a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent foreign degree) and completion of at least one year of a Ph.D. program; or a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent foreign degree) and at least two years of teaching experience at the college level.
- Experience teaching critical and analytical reading, thinking, and/or writing at the college level.
