POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Student Engagement and DEI Coordinator will be an integral part of the Student Engagement and Diversity team within CSE Student Services. This position will support students broadly through student organizations oversight, collegiate initiatives and programs creation and implementation, and focused efforts in areas of DEI, including Women in Science and Engineering (WISE). This student-centered role creates an environment and opportunities for students exploring the collegiate landscape and those who may need assistance or support as they navigate their personal and organizational development. Additionally, the Coordinator will be instrumental in creating, updating, and implementing a variety of initiatives including support for BIPOC, first-gen, women in science and engineering, low socioeconomic, LGTBQIA+ and other marginalized students and student communities. The Coordinator will also be the direct line of support for CSE Living Learning Communities and their Community Advisors. This position collaborates and develops strong relationships with CSE staff and academic departments as well as other units across the University. The Coordinator will teach a section of the College’s first-year course, CSE 1001, and participate in recruitment and other collegiate events. The salary for this position starts at $50,000 and is dependent on the successful applicant’s experience and skills. Additionally, all CSE student services employees will continue to have a hybrid work schedule with a minimum of three days on campus. This position requires occasional attendance at on and off-campus events during and outside regular business hours.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
DEI and Student Engagement Programming and Initiatives (45%)
- Coordinate CSE student organization support services including assisting groups with space and resource reservations, community initiatives, and informal student group advising.
- Collaborate with collegiate life and advising colleagues to offer comprehensive support to the CSE cohort of President’s Emerging Scholars (PES) through tracking student progress and intervening to support student persistence and success
- Coordinate and implement programming for the RISE program focused on supporting underrepresented and under-supported students to thrive in the college and at the University through facilitated study groups, community building activities, professional development opportunities, and coordination of other program logistics.
- Manage identity-based student organizations (NSBE, SHPE, AISES, oSTEM, etc) on campus and the college’s connection to regional and national conference meetings of their affiliated professional organizations.
- Coordinate and implement programming for the Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Initiative and its programs such as the Medtronic Kick-off, Living and Learning Community, Book Clubs, and other sponsored events.
Collegiate Initiatives, Events, and Programs (45%)
- Lead logistics for collegiate events such as the CSE Winter Light Show and CSE Week; including purchasing, reservations, and Collegiate communication and marketing.
- Spearhead the college’s participation in University events such as Homecoming, Parent and Family Weekend, and more
- Advise the Plumb Bob Honorary Leadership Society student group as they coordinate plans for CSE Week (a century-old tradition of CSE).
- Provide leadership and strategic programming for CSE Living Learning Communities including the CSE Second Year Experience and the CSE Transfer House.
- Participate as a leader of the DEI Leadership Recognition program committee.
Instruction, Professional Development, & Service (10%)
- Teach one section of CSE 1001: First Year Experience.
- Attend CSE 1001 training sessions and end-of-semester retreat, hold weekly office hours and supervise the undergraduate teaching assistant.
- Serve on Student Services, College, and University-wide committees as requested or needed.
- Engage actively with diversity, equity, and inclusion work, training, certificates, and other opportunities through the Office of Equity and Diversity.
- Participate actively in CSE D&I Alliance programs, committees, and training
- Participate in College recruitment, outreach, orientation and transition programs, student engagement, and commencement, and career events and presentations.
- Participate in local and national professional development associations, events, and programs in the unit, College, University, and/or broader community
- Other duties as assigned
REQUIRED:
- Bachelor’s degree plus at least four years of relevant experience working in a student services office or related setting, or master's degree plus at least two years of relevant experience.
- Exceptional organization, written, and oral communication skills; strong presentation skills.
- Commitment to the values and active participation and experience in diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice advocacy.
- An understanding of student development with experience in developing and implementing student-focused programs.
- Ability to work well and communicate with diverse populations, including students, faculty, staff, and employers.
- Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work as part of a team.
- Proven ability to oversee multiple tasks with attention to detail, prioritize, and problem-solve.
PREFERRED:
- Master's degree in counseling, student affairs/personnel, higher education, or a related discipline.
- At least 2-3 years of experience working in student affairs in higher education
- Understanding of student development theories
- Familiarity with the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities Campus.
- Experience working with students in STEM majors.
- Positive, motivated, and enthusiastic work style.
- Demonstrated experience advising/counseling small groups of students and giving presentations.
