Position Details:Summary of Duties:Washington State University's Assistant Director of Native American Health Sciences' Programs and Student Services position will help advance the mission of the unit by providing direct support to the Director and department through strategic planning and leadership within the areas of development and management of of Native American health education pathways and programs, including but not limited to recruitment, outreach, and retention, culturally inclusive Indigenous curriculum, and tribal community health initiatives and partnerships.
The Assistant Director establishes consistent oversight and leadership over student, academic, and tribal community areas within the new Center for Native American Health, manages programs and staff, and tracks and reports upon pathways and impacts. Additionally, they contribute as an educator and manager of the newly developed Indigenous health curriculum and certificate, as a tribal health liaison within and outside of WSU system, as a contributor to the growth of the unit through collaborative partnerships and initiatives and helps develop and manage internal unit policies toward mission driven goals. This person will act as an instructor of record.
Develops, manages, and maintains strong working relationships within the University system and with tribal partners located throughout the Pacific Northwest. Provides outreach to Native communities and builds partnerships that will develop opportunities for American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) students to explore health science programs as options for further studies.
Essential Duties: Program and Student Services Management: 40%
- Develops and leads the recruitment and retention programs and services of Native American students for the WSU Health Science programs. Also, works directly to support the learning and service needs of non-Native health students who study, collaborate, and visit the Center for Native American Health.
- Develops, implements, manages, and evaluates in coordination with the Director of NAHS, Student Success Program Coordinator, health and allied health colleges and departments, and Native Programs in Pullman, pathways, and programs toward expanding the number of Native American pathways and opportunities for pre-health and health students on Spokane, Pullman, and other system-wide campuses.
- Responsible to plan, develop, and implement recruitment and retention policies and programming for AI/AN students.
- Directs and leads staff in retention activities with all health science academic advisors responsible for the Native American students. Collaborates with program advisors and academic coordinators to assess academic level, transfers, and transcripts. Oversees staff who respond to inquiries and assists students with individual academic plans. Directly engages in high level inquiries and concerns as they arise.
- Direct staff in the development of programs to lead the recruitment and retention of Native Americans for the Health Sciences.
- Directs the development, planning and management of all Native youth and pathway program outreach activities directed to AI/AN communities, tribes, and Native organizations.
- Collaborates with WSU recruiters, admissions offices, advisors, other Pacific Northwest institutions, WSU Native American Outreach coordinator and other WSU personnel and recruiters on recruitment and marketing initiatives.
- Oversee dissemination of information regarding activities of the Health Science programs to Native American students and other appropriate groups and organizations, and actively recruits potential students for the health science degree programs.
- Leads the expansion of student support services for Native American students who are enrolled within the Colleges of Nursing, Pharmacy, and Medicine and other programs in the health professions and health sciences.
- Establishes, manages, and maintains a data base of professional contacts with community colleges, tribal colleges, consortium partners, and tribal educational departments and of Native American students. Maintains network among AI/AN communities through partnership-building and networking activities.
- Provides recommendations to the University, Colleges, and committees for the recruitment and retention of Native American students and research and grant development.
- Travels to various locations for recruitment, conferences, meetings, or when assigned. Travel is occasionally overnight.
Leadership of NAHS Programs and Center for Native American Health: 30%
- Provides strategic leadership and operations oversight of the Center for Native American Health, pathway programs, cultural events, student support and success, community partners, curriculum, and other programming as assigned.
- Assists the Director with leadership responsibilities as they pertain to meeting the mission of WSU Native American Health Sciences and the Center for Native American Health and represents the Director and the unit when the Director is absent, for management of the Center, meetings, or other work as assigned.
- Assists the Director of WSU Native American Health Sciences in building a collaborative team comprised of faculty, staff, and student employees, and helps define, develop, plan and implement other operational activities.
- Provides program evaluation, assessment, and further development planning for all NAHS programs.
- Collaborates with the Director in the development and management of fiscal and operational strategies, initiatives, and resource management.
- Develops and creates plans, budgets, policy and procedure for the Native American Health Sciences pathway and programs, to include new policies that align with the mission of the unit within the Center for Native American Health.
- Collaborates with current and potential internal and external partners of the office of Native American Health Sciences, serves on multiple institutional and at times external committees and boards, and contributes to other internal and external partnerships and collaborations.
- Prepares and provides various internal and external presentations on behalf of the department and upon request by the Director of NAHS.
- Prepares and provides annual reports, budgets, context and narrative for the unit's newsletter, and other communications as they relate to the Center for Native American Health's operations, impacts, and outcomes to the Director, the Vice President of Health Sciences, and the WSU NAHS Tribal Advisory Board upon request.
- Represents the unit as a Tribal Health Liaison between WSU Health Science programs and Pacific Northwest tribes, organizations, internal WSU Boards and departments, and other stakeholders. Answers questions, and helps to interpret communications, policy and procedures, and assists with cultural proficiencies between working groups.
Curriculum, Teaching, and Scholarly Management: 15%
- Directs and manages the newly developed Indigenous health perspectives certificate and supports all initiatives of the certificate as it pertains to budgeting, hiring and supervising instruction employees, evaluations and assessments, recruitment, and marketing of the certificate, and working closely with Global Learning, internal departments and colleges, and external education, health, and community partners.
- Co-develops syllabi or lessons for coursework, teaches/instructs, and assesses culturally responsive curriculum. (can HR add that they may be teaching a course on Pullman or other campus or in an online situation)
- Provide annual reporting for any curriculum, teaching, scholarly management areas within the department to include but not limited to the Indigenous health perspectives certificate and educational pathways
- Provides supervision, advisement, and/or critical relational support to Native and non-Native students conducting academic scholarly, research, experiential learning, and other projects that involve tribal communities or initiatives through WSU Health Sciences and system-wide health related activities.
- Reviews and responds to research protocols submitted for review through IRB or faculty.
- Identifies educational, scholarly, research, experiential, and other opportunities for Native pre-health and health students to support their learning and pathway needs.
- Provide instruction and support to health sciences undergraduate, graduate, and professional students going into tribal clinics and communities to teach about their systems, history, current areas of needs, and set them up with the tribal community elder or representative from the clinic toward collaborative orientation ensuring students are prepared for culturally responsiveness.
- Develop culturally responsive curriculum, lesson plans, learning objectives, and instructs for newly developed coursework, electives, and pathway programs.
- Act as an instructor of record.
- Collaborates with the Director to train and supervise staff entering into relationships with the area , regional, and tribes across the nation.
- Collaborates with the Director to present training sessions designed to ensure that all faculty, staff, advisory board members, and partners, are ready to complete work in Native communities before work begins.
- Collaborates with the Director to provide presentations, trainings, workshops, panels, and other discussion with and for other government agencies, officials, institutions of higher education, health organizations, researchers, and other stakeholders and entities on topics that relate to the work of WSU NAHS.
Supervision: 10%
- Provide leadership for staff assigned. Complete annual evaluations for assigned staff and provide direction for staff development and training.
- Supervises, plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates the work of assigned staff including but not limited to scheduling, time report review and approval, time off requests, and disciplinary actions.
- Disseminates information regarding activities of the Health Science programs to Native American students and other appropriate groups and organizations, and actively recruits potential students for the health science degree programs.
Other: 5%

Required Qualifications:Positions require a Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and four (4) years of progressively responsible relevant experience, which has included at least one (1) year of managerial experience. A Master's degree in a related field may be substituted for up to one (1) year of the required experience. Education and experience can be tailored to fit the specific organizational entity/directorial assignment. Positions may require applicable licensure and/or certification.
Additional Requirements:- Master's degree in Health, Education, Communication or related field.
- Demonstrated experience with strategic planning and/or program development/expansion.
- Demonstrated experience leading community and student development programs.
- Demonstrated experience providing excellent cross-cultural communication.
- Demonstrated experience developing culturally responsive curriculum, training and/or teaching.
- Demonstrated experience presenting training sessions in one-on-one, small, and large group settings.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising employees.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver's license by time of hire.
- Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including some evenings and weekends.
- Must be able to travel, including overnights on occasion.
Preferred Qualifications:- PhD or equivalent degree in a relevant field.
- Demonstrated experience in working with diverse populations, underrepresented or disadvantaged students.
- Demonstrated familiarity with educational systems at all levels-secondary and higher education and with tribal communities.
- Demonstrated experience developing and leading programs in the health sciences for Native American students at all levels.
- Demonstrated experience in managing multiple operating programs.
- Demonstrated experience in research and/or community driven projects.
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience working with tribal communities, higher education, and/or health systems.
- Demonstrated knowledge in Native American histories and/or health areas.
- Familiarity with Plateau Tribes, grant writing, leadership skills.
