- Builds, connects and maintains relationships with law and health related advanced degree programs (ie. medical, dental, veterinary) to facilitate the continued education of students and alumni to advance their educational goals.
- Takes a lead role on campus to facilitate the success of UM students on the Ann Arbor campus interested in legal and health related careers/education.
- Engage students in discussions about their interests, aptitude and values to support them as they structure their academic experiences to prepare for their next steps.
- Incorporate assessment tools (i.e.MBTI and SII and CliftonStrenghts) in career coaching and programming as appropriate, requiring knowledge of theory, administration and interpretation of instruments.
- Contribute to the mission of a fast-paced, career services office by creating opportunities that contribute to students’ development through self-discovery and reflection, understanding the plethora of options in law and medicine within the world of work, and continue to develop strong networks that allows for access to relevant information within these fields.
- Develop robust strategies to provide students with information related to their decisions to pursue advanced degrees, leverage campus and field specific networks for mutual benefit, and coordinate a UCC strategy for offering students exposure to, and ways to learn from, experiences that will forward their understanding of law, medicine and ancillary professions to these two primary areas.
Student Development through Direct Service/Career Coaching - 35%
- Create a positive learning environment for all students; including presenting informed perspectives on diversity, equity and inclusion with students in preparation for their transition to their next steps (employment/advanced education).
- Foster student learning and development through direct service interventions, career coaching and advising to guide them through all phases of their career development.
- Facilitate programming efforts on behalf of UCC and across campus, independently and in collaboration with student organizations and University units.
- Utilize current technologies and information management tools, demonstrating creativity in service delivery to benefit students and improve organizational effectiveness, including Handshake, Canvas, Big Interview and UCAN. As well as social media outlets when possible.
- Provide appropriate referrals for students to other agencies if assistance needed is beyond career coaching.
Pre Law and Pre Health Educational Development - 40%
- Develop and continue the strong implementation of a University Career Center (UCC) strategic plan to attract students at varying levels of career decision making to provide resources, exposure and access to information and professionals in the law and health fields.
- Organize educational opportunities with relevant stakeholders within these fields, drawing on access to professionals, for students from all schools/colleges/departments.
- Take a leadership role in signature UCC initiatives, ie. Law Day and Health Expo
- Lead new initiatives to incorporate law and health related representatives into engagements.
- Manage the two UCC Career Track areas - health and law.
- Participate in creating marketing strategies for events over a wide range of platforms.
- Engage in outreach efforts to alumni/ae and admissions offices to facilitate prospective new partnerships in support of UM students.
- Provide education, campus resources and share the campus landscape to support admissions officers interested in developing diverse talent pipelines.
- Cultivate relationships with students, organizations, and other University units in effort to facilitate positive relationships on the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor campus. Seek creative opportunities to connect students, academic departments, schools and colleges, admissions offices and alumni.
- Respond to and resolve student issues of concern in a timely manner.
- Actively engage in the vibrant professional communities available to advisors in this arena, stay current on trends and changes as well as key points of interest, follow trends on social media, and other resources of interest to students.
- Utilize and develop UCC’s online Canvas site to disseminate information and manage and track communication.
- Seek data to better understand application trends, student outcomes, and information important in developing relationships with graduate school admissions offices. Research, interpret, and stay current on important trends in the field.
Leadership/Administration - 10%
- Exercise autonomy in the management of the assigned area of responsibility within the office.
- Collect and access statistical data on the success of UM students applying and matriculating to professional schools in key areas of interest to the UM campus. Prepare report highlighting relevant information, as needed.
- Comply with and educate others on career related legal, regulatory policy, and ethical guidelines including Federal regulations and laws (e.g., affirmative action and EEOC standards, FERPA) hiring practices, and safety programs. Maintain confidentiality on work with students and student records.
- Manage continuous improvement in area through systematically using data to manage by fact (i.e., includes data gathering, best practice benchmarking, and program assessment). Keep accurate records and statistical information on clients using UCC’s Handshake system.
- Serve as expert for area of responsibility providing written reports and other communication strategies to educate others regarding defined student population, current issues, and national trends in area of responsibility, as needed.
University Career Center Team - 15%
- Contribute to building a positive unit environment that advances and affirms the values of coworkers and student staff members.
- Forward the mission and goals of unit and Student Life’s organizational values and strategic priorities.
- Promote the highest standards of the profession in accordance with the principles ethics, and standards of ACPA, NASPA, NACE, and CAS, and establish good practice in Student Affairs.
- Master's degree fields related to career development that includes the broad-based study of theory and research in student development, social identity and student learning, or terminal degree in law or health related fields
- Minimum 2 years professional-level experience career coaching, counseling and/or advising
- 2-3 years of experience in facilitating group process and programming
- 2-3 years of experience in program design based on learning objectives and evaluation
- Minimum 2 years experience managing programmatic efforts including overall strategy development and implementation
- Minimum 2 years experience establishing priorities and exercising sound decision making on relevant issues
- 1-2 years experience in a complex, fast-paced office
- 1-2 years experience with multiple student populations including undecided students, first generation students, LGBTQ+ students, students with disabilities, first year students and international students
- 1-2 years experience managing an area/service in an office that places a high value on quality customer service, team orientation, intentional planning, continuous improvement, and puts students at the center
- Experience with interactive technology ie. Canvas or similar systems
- 1-2 years experience organizing larger scale events with multiple components
- Strong writing skills

Working conditions
- Ability to travel during the academic year to represent UCC at national meetings; accept invitations to medical and law schools to develop relationships with key stakeholders.
- Ability to work some weekends, as needed.
- Opportunity for some hybrid work. Ability to adapt schedules during peak times in the semester is expected. Flexible work agreements are reviewed annually and are subject to change upon business needs.
This role may have reporting obligations under Title IX and Clery.
