Intercollegiate Athletics has an outstanding opportunity for an Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Development.
Reporting to and under the direction of the Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Development, the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Development will be responsible for the creation, development, and execution of the Boundless Futures student-athlete development program for 650 student-athletes in 22 sports at the University of Washington. In collaboration with the Student-Athlete Academic Services Staff (SAAS), Athletics Department staff, and campus entities, the Assistant Director will ensure student-athletes are provided with relevant support services and programming in the areas of career development, personal development, community service, and leadership.
Responsibilities: In conjunction with the Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Development, the Assistant Director of Student-Athlete Development is responsible for the leadership and day-to-day management of the comprehensive Student-Athlete Development program for student-athletes and supports the Director of Student-Athlete Development in the management of the Student-Athlete Development Coordinator and/or student-athlete development interns. Manage portions of the budget annually. Develop, facilitate and evaluate curriculum, recommendations and extensive programming for comprehensive student-athlete development programming the areas of student-athlete orientation, life transition, career development, personal development, and leadership. Manages the ongoing evaluation and evolution of the curriculum / programs to ensure they meet all key objectives and the needs of UW student-athletes. Develop and facilitate, or work with subject matter experts to develop, career, leadership, personal development education sessions for all teams. Develop curriculum and teach the General Studies classes for student-athletes, as well as the evaluation and measurement of classes. If needed, manage additional instructors for General Studies courses. Provide direction to and support Student-Athlete Development Coordinator in planning and executing Boundless Futures’ special events including; Husky Kickoff Barbeque, Dinner with a Dawg, Windermere Cup Community Service event, WSAAC Year End event, and the annual Graduation Reception. Coordinate and execute personality, behavioral (DISC), and other assessments along with follow-up educational sessions for student-athletes, coaches, and teams. Provide recommendations on new assessments and the integration of these into the student-athlete development curriculum. Manages and provides direction to the Student-Athlete Development Coordinator and/or SAAS Program Coordinator on the execution of New Student-Athlete Orientation programming and each quarterly NSAO session. Establish and maintain a strong campus presence to ensure close working relationships with university staff, faculty, administration, and alumni so that coordination of efforts may take place where appropriate. Coordinate, vet and hire speakers and curriculum for various workshop and team programming. Remain updated on current trends and best practices in career services, leadership development, diversity and inclusion, as well as trends across the NCAA and the Pac-12 Conference. Participate in recruiting visits and presentations as requested. Serve as the lead advisor to WSAAC and other student groups; working in conjunction with the Student-Athlete Development Coordinator and student-athlete group executives. Additional duties as assigned by the Senior Associate Athletic Director - Student Development or the Assistant Athletic Director of Student-Athlete Development.
Compliance with the rules and regulations of the University, the NCAA, the Pacific-12 Conference, the State of Washington and any other governing body is of paramount importance to the University. The overall responsibility of this position is for the successful operation of the program in full compliance with all such rules and regulations. As a condition of employment, the employee shall be required to participate in rules education programs offered by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics.
Minimum Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, Psychology, Sports Management or a related field required. A minimum of three years of experience working in the area of student development, college athletics or academic services, or related field.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Additional Requirements: Proven ability to develop programs and coordinate resources at the college level. Significant understanding of the lives and challenges of student-athletes. Ability to multi-task and manage multiple projects simultaneously and with limited direction and complete projects by established deadlines. Demonstrated work experience with evidence of strong organizational, time management, communication, and supervisory skills. Ability to work with diverse student populations. Proven ability to work collaboratively with faculty, campus administrators, and staff. Evening hours required on a regular basis in addition to occasional weekend hours.
Desired Qualifications: Master's degree in Education, Sports Management, Counseling or Exercise Science/Leadership strongly preferred. Event planning experience strongly preferred. Student-athlete development experience and experience teaching courses strongly preferred.
