Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Continuing Education, the Director manages the Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA), including the program???s annual conferences for high school and college students, its contests and awards programs, and its publishing activities. The Director provides strategic leadership to improve student media in schools and colleges throughout the United States. The position supports fundraising efforts and external relations activities in collaboration with the Associate Dean of Alumni Relations and Development along with budget management and staff supervision.
CSPA Management and Planning
Plans and manages the association in furtherance of its goal to improve student media in schools and colleges throughout the United States, by instruction and evaluation, as well as publishing the best work done by students;
Develops and implements sales and marketing strategies in a competitive environment to promote the success of association goals;
Set policies and procedures and provide a system for program evaluation;
Monitors and analyzes issues, actions, and proposals relating to student journalism at the national level;
Supervise the written evaluations of 2000 student publications and the judging of 15,000 individual competitive student contests entriels by a national network of 350 journalism faculty;
Manages for excellence three national conventions, conferences, and workshops annually;
Represents the association at local, state, and regional meetings of school and college student press organizations;
Serves as executive secretary of the Columbia Scholastic Press Advisers Association (CSPAA), an organization of 1600 faculty advisors to student publications in the 50 states and Canada
Budget Management and Staff Oversight
For both areas, prepares annual income forecast and operating plan and manages resources to maintain self-sufficiency;
Assists program staff in the preparation and administration of budgets, fiscal analysis, and financial reporting;
Supervises and coaches all staff. Responsible for establishing performance standards, motivating teams to achieve and exceed standards, planning and ensuring regular staff meetings, identifying and coordinating training and development needs.
Special Projects & Other Duties
Disseminates information about CSPA???s activities to its members and to local and national news media and outside agencies.
Serves on a variety of School and University Committees and participates in special projects and duties, as assigned.
