Job Summary: | The UW Odyssey Project currently seeks an Assistant Coordinator to help with all areas of Odyssey but with an emphasis on Odyssey Junior, our youth enrichment program serving children ages 0-17. This position operates with a large degree of collaboration and teamwork.
Since 2003, the award-winning, multi-generational UW Odyssey Project has empowered families living at the poverty level to overcome adversity and achieve dreams through higher education. Graduates of the program have moved from homelessness to master's degrees, from incarceration to meaningful work in the community. The Odyssey Project includes four core programs. (1) Odyssey Course: Each year, 30 low-income adults enroll in a two-semester, six-credit UW English course to explore literature, philosophy, history, art, music, and writing; all students receive free tuition, textbooks, and dinner. (2) Onward Odyssey: Odyssey supports its graduates through advising, tutoring, targeted coursework, and financial resources as they pursue college degrees and other dreams. (3) Odyssey Junior: Through a weekly literacy and arts enrichment program for ~50 children and grandchildren of Odyssey students each year, Odyssey gets the next generation excited about learning and more hopeful about their futures. (4) Odyssey Beyond Bars: This new initiative focuses on expanding college access to inmates in the Wisconsin prison system.
Tasks: - Sets up and cleans up classrooms each week for all Odyssey Junior groups on Wednesday nights - Assists with UW safety protocols to ensure the safety of Odyssey Junior participants - Assists Odyssey Junior director with administrative duties - Purchases and maintains supplies for Odyssey Junior classrooms - Supports events (family workshops, Odyssey picnics, professional development, field trips) - Engages volunteers and hourly staff to support weekly tutoring sessions - Helps on Tuesday nights to staff the Family Learning Center |
Responsibilities: | Contributes to the development, implementation, administration, coordination, and evaluation for one or more academic programs to ensure effectiveness in meeting departmental and student development goals and initiatives. Strives to create a welcoming, equitable, and inclusive work environment. - 20% Utilizes independent judgement regarding development, implementation, promotion, and evaluation for one or more academic programs, initiatives, or events
- 20% Identifies program, needs, contributes to the development of unit workflows, schedules logistics and secures resources for meetings, events, and interviews
- 20% Coordinates program components and evaluates program effectiveness and provides recommendations for improvement
- 20% May supervise the day to day activities of one or more academic programs and resolves issues exercising discretion to meet unit goals.
- 5% Supports development of and help to staff the Odyssey Family Learning Center by creating and maintaining a welcoming space for students and families
- 5% Assists with outreach and communication with our Odyssey families
- 5% Assists with additional Odyssey programming as needed
- 5% Attends drop-in tutoring on Tuesday nights to engage children and volunteers while parent/caregivers meet with tutors or advisors
