Job Summary:
In conjunction with the Vice President for Student Affairs/Chief Outcomes Officer, the Dean of Students provides leadership and direction for all planning, staffing, educational, operational, facility, and budgetary aspects of the Dean of Students Office. The Dean of Students will oversee all aspects of the management of the Dean of Students Office, including fiscal oversight, establishment and implementation of short and long-range goals, policies, and operating procedures, and establishment and maintenance of staffing levels to effectively accomplish the department's goals. The Dean of Students will provide oversight of the Student Success Centers and Disability Services for Students to ensure that academic support services are adequate to support the needs of students.
Duties and Responsibilities:

- Demonstrate commitment and leadership in the role of a community college in the provision of knowledge and skill development for personal and professional advancement for the people of Rhode Island.
- Provide leadership and utilize an equity lens for the development of policies and procedures that ensure all students are treated with dignity and respect and provided with equal opportunity and access to a college education and college programs.
- Work to identify and mitigate barriers and structural biases that prevent under-represented students from succeeding.
- Work alongside colleagues to create programs and partnerships that enhance retention and graduation rates, student learning and the student experience.
Student Conduct:
- Direct and oversee the College's student conduct and academic dishonesty process, including maintaining and updating the Student Handbook, managing the student conduct data systems, coordinating the student hearing process, assessment of student conduct data, and sharing of findings and trends.
- Respond to and address faculty and staff concerns regarding student conduct.
- Recruit, train and organize faculty, staff, and students to staff the student conduct system.
- Liaise with Campus Police, General Counsel, and other departments to ensure that the student code of conduct, conduct system, and conduct publications reflect legal and regulatory requirements and are consistent with advice from legal counsel. Ensure student due process and equitable sanctions are imposed.
- Provide professional development activities for faculty and staff regarding issues of student conduct, classroom management, and de-escalation.
Emergency Management/ Threat Assessment:
- In conjunction with Campus Police, Risk Management, and other college departments, develop, maintain and lead a Threat Assessment and behavioral intervention process to identify physical threats to the college community and intervene before they can happen.
- Meet with students who exhibit behaviors inconsistent with College expectations and provide guidance and support. Coach and train faculty and staff to manage and influence students when behaviors are beginning to be exhibited outside of College expectations.
- Assist in the execution of the College's emergency response plan and serve as a first responder for the Division with responsibilities that include: performing emergency response to incidents including evenings, weekends, and periods when classes are not in session; Providing on-site emergency preparation/response coverage as necessary; Serving as a policy enforcement officer representing the Division at various College functions and events as determined by the Vice President.
Compliance:
- Provide oversight with regard to Title IV – Student Right to Know regulatory requirements to ensure compliance with the U.S. Department of Education.
- Develop, implement, and communicate preventative measures and activities focused on drug and alcohol awareness.
- Provide oversight with regard to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act/Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1974. Develop, implement, and communicate measures and activities that advance understanding of student rights to reasonable accommodations and access.
- Serve as the deputy Title IX coordinator. Monitor regulatory updates and case law. Develop, implement and assess programming and training for students. Oversee access to and maintenance of lactation spaces.
- Provide strategic and operational oversight of Substance Abuse Prevention programs, Civility and Violence Prevention programs, Voter Registration and Civic Engagement programs as required by federal law.
- Assist with coordination and support of state-required programs (Rhode Island Promise Scholarship, Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Plan, etc.) as designated by the General Assembly, Board of Education or the Postsecondary Commissioner.
Administrative Support:
- Provide oversight of the Student Success Centers and Disability Services for Students to ensure that academic support services are adequate to support the needs of students.
- Assist in the assessment of legal exposure and risk management for the division.
- Assist students with complaints, academic grievances, and leave of absence requests. Assist students and parents with requests for assistance or general complaints. Address requests for support and relief from students and parents that fall outside existing college procedures.
- Perform bereavement outreach and family liaison interactions in cases involving severe student injury and death.
- Liaise with Campus Police and Public Safety agencies on all matters of student life safety
- Provide follow-up assistance to the Vice President in matters pertaining to inquiries, requests for information, and report generation and analysis.
- Liaise with state and local government agencies (for information requests, policy formation, and planning) as directed. Partner with community agencies (for referrals, program coordination, information sharing, and consultation.)
- Assist with the planning, budget management, and operations of the College's Commencement ceremonies.
Minimum Requirements:
- Master's degree required in college student personnel, higher education, or a related field.
- Minimum of three years of progressively responsible student affairs experience preferably at a community college.
- Ability to work successfully with at-risk, culturally diverse student populations and a steadfast commitment to the success of CCRI and every one of its students.
- Ability to thrive in a dynamic environment requiring flexibility, adaptability, creativity, and teamwork.
- Experience in fiscal planning and management.
- Strong verbal, organizational, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proficiency in written communication skills.
