Cornell Tech seeks a Virtual Site Program Director, Break Through Tech AI who will have leadership responsibility and management oversight for designing, launching, and running this new program virtually to students across the US. This individual will play a critical role in adapting our existing hybrid program model for virtual delivery, developing the people model and growth strategy for the program, and building the value proposition for prospective industry, academic, and non-profit partners. The individual in this role will also have management oversight for the recruitment and supervision of program staff members.
ABOUT BREAK THROUGH TECH
Break Through Tech works at the intersection of academia and industry to propel more underrepresented women into higher education and careers in tech -- with a particular emphasis on Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and first- generation college going women and non-binary students. In New York, the program has already served over 3000 undergraduate women; facilitating, encouraging, and enabling a significant increase in the participation of women in higher education in fields related to technology.
Hosted by Cornell Tech, Break Through Tech AI is the new program from Break Through Tech on a mission to credential and fast-track undergraduate women into careers in the fastest-growing areas of tech: data science, machine learning, and artificial intelligence. Developed with industry leaders, the Break Through Tech AI program includes three high-level components that are considered critical for increasing the competitiveness and marketability of students pursuing AI/ML engineering roles: (1) skills-based training, (2) industry-relevant portfolios, and (3) mentorship, career coaching, and job placement support. Over the next four years, the Break Through AI program will expand nationwide to foster a diverse next generation of AI leaders who will build AI technologies that are fairer and more representative of our society.
JOB DESCRIPTION
The ideal candidate comes with experience leading programs with multiple corporate and academic partners. We are looking for someone with a deep understanding of the culture of the tech industry and nature of tech jobs, is equally comfortable with the culture and nature of working in a higher education academic environment, has experience collaborating with both corporate and startup executives, and has demonstrated experience developing new program concepts that support the mission as well as operationalizing those concepts. This role also includes being a public spokesperson for the initiative.
The Virtual Site Program Director must thrive in a dynamic and continuously evolving environment and be able to independently "steer the ship" to stay on mission. The individual must have experience supervising other employees and growing as well as fostering a collaborative environment for student and professional volunteers. We are seeking a candidate with strong organizational skills and significant experience in both relationship management and program execution, with the ability to set priorities and coordinate ongoing activities in parallel, manage competing demands, and provide timely responses to urgent issues. The ideal candidate has a flexible, entrepreneurial spirit, has the ability to connect academic culture and curriculum to real-world digital culture, and excels in developing and managing both personal and corporate relationships.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
- Lead strategy for the development, execution, and growth of the virtual site of the Break Through Tech AI program - 40%
- Design and manage a virtual site for the Break Through Tech AI Program - 40%
- Develop and maintain relationships with corporate and academic partners and volunteers - 20%
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible 3-year term position with the possibility of renewal. This position requires occasional work on evenings and weekends, particularly during the academic year. This is expected to be a remote position, with the option to work in-person on the Cornell Tech NYC campus 1-2 days per week if desired.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree with 5-7 years of experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Passion for diversity in tech, education, and social impact.
- Demonstrated success working in leadership roles in program development and execution in the areas of education, training, talent development, internship and/or mentorship programs, and/or student services.
- Must have strong organizational skills and program management skills with experience in independently planning and executing large academic or corporate programs.
- Ability to define and analyze data from a variety of sources to ensure programs are achieving measurable impact.
- Prior experience managing a team of individuals toward outcomes while building and maintaining authentic relationships and strong team culture.
- Good client relationship skills; proven effectiveness at "selling" strategic opportunities to academic and corporate leaders
- Entrepreneurial drive; ability to see what is possible and remain optimistic in the midst of complexity and uncertainty, and taking bold action
- Ability to communicate with, work effectively with, and maintain a positive rapport with students, professors and corporate leaders alike.
- Proven ability to work in a team context. Highest standards of integrity in order to develop trust with current students, faculty, staff, and employers.
- Must be able to take a leadership role as public spokesperson for the Break Through Tech AI Program in the local market.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor's or master's degree in a technology or analytical domain
- Experience with Salesforce or equivalent CRM tool
- Work experience leading large programs in an academic and/or corporate environment that have a technology orientation and a talent development/training focus.
- Specific experience working with both faculty and corporate partners.
