The Office of Financial Aid Services in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (JHUSOM) provides financial assistance to eligible students in medical, graduate, and doctorial programs and offers financial planning, debt management counseling, and workshops to help students manage their borrowing and make informed decisions about their financial well-being.
We are seeking a Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships who supervises and manages the Financial Aid Office to ensure compliance with federal and state legal, fiscal, and statutory regulations. The Director reports to the Assistant Dean for Enrollment Management with dotted line reporting to the Assistant Vice Provost for Financial Aid, and coordinates closely with leadership in the JHUSOM and the Johns Hopkins University. The director assists in establishing the philosophy, strategic planning, and implementation of financial aid policies and procedures for the JHUSOM.
This position may work a hybrid schedule, with an expectation of at least two days a week in the office. The on-site presence will depend on business needs, and at times could exceed the minimum. The Director has the opportunity to participate in a discretionary annual performance bonus program based on established metrics of up to 15% of annual salary.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
Work closely with the Assistant Dean for Enrollment Management to develop strategies to enhance SOM's financial aid need-based scholarship program in support of students from diverse and economically disadvantage backgrounds.
Direct the office operations.
Foster a data-driven and analytical office environment where key performance indicators are integrated into all aspects of process, staff evaluations, resource decisions, and goal setting.
Develop and implement strategies to manage multiple work streams within the JHU central organizational structure of the financial aid divisional offices, ensuring that they are conducted within existing policy, procedural, and compliance guidelines.
Work closely with a wide variety of internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to: current and prospective students, JHUSOM and university staff and leaderships; the JHUSOM Divisional Budget Office; the Assistant Dean for Enrollment Management; the Offices of Development and Alumni Relations; the Office of Student Enrollment and Accounts Management (SEAM); the Office of Medical Student Admissions; the Office of Medical Student Affairs; the Office of Graduate Biomedical Education, and the Central Compliance Office Team.
Foster a collaborative culture that encourages written policies, procedures and business guides, as well as edit checks, standards, and quality assurance reviews to ensure the accuracy and consistency of work.
Supervise team of financial aid staff in a hybrid work environment. Supervisory responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, training, motivating, evaluating, and initiating disciplinary action (in coordination with the Administrator of the Office of the Vice Dean for Education) as needed, according to Human Resources policies and procedures.
Ensure financial aid staff work within the central Student Enrollment and Account Management (SEAM) team processes
Provide data for completion of all federal, state, and institutional reports, annual audits and program reviews (FISAP, MHEC, etc.); complete annual American Association of Medical Colleges Liaison Committee on Medical Education (AAMC LCME) report.
Manage awarding and reconciliation of JHUSOM's $25M financial aid program, which includes institutional scholarship and loans, federal loans and work-study, and state and private scholarship and loan programs.
Complete annual financial aid Satisfactory Academic Progress review in coordination with Office of Medical Student Affairs and individual biomedical graduate education programs.
Develop and monitor the financial aid operations budget.
Provide leadership to promote and maintain integrity, accuracy, and timeliness in the delivery of financial aid to students.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
Bachelor's Degree and five years related experience in a higher education financial aid office, including leadership, supervisory, and systems responsibilities.

Experience in a school of medicine financial aid office.
Experience with PowerFAIDS.
Experience with OnBase.
Experience managing staff in a hybrid or remote work environment.
Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Familiarity with current trends and challenges in financial aid, and a deep understanding of the principles of need-based aid and Institutional Methodology (IM).
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.
Strong interpersonal skills.
Demonstrated experience working positively and collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders, including learners, faculty, management, leadership, and internal and external stakeholders.
Excellent planning and organizational skills.
Demonstrated ability to identify problems and challenges and developed successful strategies to solve them.
Demonstrated understanding of the principles of need-based aid and Institutional Methodology.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point).
Knowledge of workflow and document imaging solutions.
Experience working with financial aid software platforms.
Finger dexterity required to manipulate objects with fingers rather than with whole hand(s) or arm(s), for example, using a keyboard.
Communication skills using the spoken word.
Ability to move about.
