The CUNY School of Medicine (CUNY SoM) at The City College of New York (CCNY) located in the heart of Harlem, is the only medical school in the City University of New York system and the only public medical school in Manhattan. Building upon 50 years of success as the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, we transitioned to the CUNY School of Medicine in 2017. The CUNY SoM offers an accelerated BS/MD (7-year program) and a Physician Assistant Master???s Degree (27 months program). True to its legacy of access, opportunity, and community transformation, the medical school???s mission remains to recruit highly talented students as diverse as New York City itself. CUNY School of Medicine as the home of healers and leaders, places a special emphasis on the recruitment of those who are underrepresented in the field of medicine, and on training high quality, culturally competent health professionals and scientists equipped to address the healthcare needs of New York???s medically under-served communities. As a major priority, CUNY School of Medicine also seeks to enhance the recruitment and retention of senior leadership, faculty, and staff to reflect the diversity of our student body more closely.
The CUNY SoM seeks applications for the position of Associate Dean for Wellness and Student Life. They will function as the Chief Wellness Officer (CWO). The CWO is a key senior advisor to the Dean of the Medical School and senior leaders on matters of community health and wellness for CUNY SoM. This position reports to the Medical School Dean and works with many different offices and constituencies across CUNY SoM on the activities and areas summarized below. The CWO will play a significant role in establishing, creating, and leading 'CUNY SoM Healthy' - a signature campus wellness initiative, and in improving access to mental health services for students on campus,
The Associate Dean/CWO will provide administrative oversight and support for all aspects of theCUNYSchoolof Medicine'swellness programmingforstudents,faculty,andstaff,andcoordinate initiativesamongthe variousofficesandprograms toenableustofulfillcriticalaccreditation standardsrelated to student wellness, counseling, and academic and career advising (LCME Elements 11.1, 11.2,12.3).Theywilldesignandassesscurrent programming andenhance student mentalhealthand suicidepreventionefforts. Workinginclosecollaboration withtheDirector of Counseling,Assistant Dean for Advising,theLearningResource Center, Student Affairs, Research, and medical education personnel. The Associate Dean for Wellness and Student Life will support and facilitate internal and external communication and assist in coordinating all other aspects of involvement.
Partnering closely with and under the direction of the Dean of CUNY SoM or her designee, the CWO, develops and implements project timelines, supports, and facilitates the work of the CUNY SoM senior leaders, faculty, students, and staff, and operationalizes detailed plans for surveys, engagement efforts, and outcomes implementation for undergraduate and graduate programs (CUNY School of Medicine).
Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):
Provide leadership and responsibility for the strategic planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of 'CUNY SoM Healthy' - a signature multifaceted school-wide wellness education program and key performance measures for students' physical, emotional, psychological, and overall well-being.
Envision, plan, and implement a new health and wellness strategy for students, staff, andfaculty.
Usingabroad-base of knowledge andexpertiseincounseling, mentalhealth,resilienceandreflection, guide and oversee school-wide wellness programming and intervention strategies, incorporatingbestpractices inmentalhealtheducationprinciples,practices,andmodelsthathave been proven effective in academic settings.
Collaborate with the Director of Counseling to support, develop, and promote initiatives, programming, and outreach directed toward students' physical, mental, emotional, and psychological well-being.
Support and advocate for students who experience crisis; intervene directly in sensitive cases involving critical illness/injury, mental illness, and other threats to mind and body.
Create regular opportunities to dialogue with faculty and professional staff to broaden the CUNY SoM community understanding of bio-psychosocial influences on health behaviors and affect positive change.
Advise to the Dean of the SoM, senior leadership, and other constituents on matters of the health and wellness of the CUNY SoM community
Serve as the medical director for CUNY SoM Healthy initiative and chair of the CUNY SoM?? Healthy Advisory Committee.
Advise on and serve as convening liaison for merithal health issues, including mental health and illness concerns among the school population collaborating with CCNY, countypublic health officials and other experts asneeded.
Represent the office of the Dean on campus and University committees on mental healthissues. Chair the Disability Committee and the Disability AdvisoryCommittee.
Serve as representative of and spokesperson for the school on matters of health and wellness and serve as an external advocate on these matters.
Facilitate discussion, planning and coordinated action among the various offices and programs concerned with the health and wellness of faculty, staff, students, and dependents; and advise on specific health, wellness, and disease managementissues.
Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, inclusion and cultural awareness through actions,interactions, andcommunicationswithcampus constituencies,andprovidesother support forthe wellness program.
Oversee coordination and collaboration among the various offices that make up in the Division of Student Affairs.
In collaboration with the Associate Dean for Student Affairs and assure high-quality, student-centered counseling, comprehensive services, including academic advising, mental health, academic support, enrollment and retention management and support, career services, and supporting and expanding student resources and activitie
Guide overall efforts to ensure compliance with all student related LCME regulations
Promote a student-centered campus community environment that supports the personal, social, and academic development of all students.
Supervise, strategic planning and assessment of programs, personnel, and budget in Student Affairs.
Lead, support and facilitate the work of the CUNY SoM senior leaders, faculty, students, and staff, and operationalize detailed plans for survey implementation, engagement efforts, andoutcomesforundergraduate andgraduateprograms;developandimplement relevantproject timelines.
Performs teaching, research and guidance in areas of expertise.
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.
Medical degree and professional credentials in medicine andpsychiatry.
Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
