POSITION DETAILS
The CUNY School of Medicine (CUNY SOM) at the City College of New York (CCNY), located in the heart of Harlem, is the only medical school in the City University of New York system and the only public medical school in Manhattan. Building upon 50 years of success as the Sophie Davis School of Biomedical Education, we transitioned to the CUNY School of Medicine in 2017. The CUNY SOM offers an accelerated BS/MD program (7-year program) and a Physician Assistant Master's Degree (27-month program). The CUNY SOM (CSOM) is recruiting for an Associate Dean for Student Affairs. The position is a full time 12- month position responsible for the organization and oversight of a comprehensive student affairs program for the students at CSOM. The Associate Dean functions as a primary student advocate in responding directly to the student needs and providing resources to assist them during the course of their education. This position reports to the Dean of the CUNY SOM and supervises the Academic/Career Advising Office; the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Office; Student Clubs and Activities, and the Student Affairs support staff.
Responsibilities include:
- Support and enhance the operations of Career Development Services in the delivery of services designed to promote career exploration, residency search preparedness, offer meaningful internships, and connect students to residency programs.
- Serves as advocate for student concerns and needs with the faculty and administration. Provides for cultural, social and recreational offerings to enable participation by students.
- Serves as liaison and communicates student-related concerns to the appropriate administrative officers of the School of Medicine, affiliated hospitals and community organizations.
- Administrative responsibility for decisions concerning the Student Affairs events and programming.
- Oversees student affairs budget.
- In collaboration with the Dean, facilitates students' access to counseling resources for personal and academic concerns.
- Participates in various committees responsible for monitoring student progress through all years of medical school training.
- Oversees orientation programs for prospective and incoming students.
- Supervises the admission processes for the school.
- Enhance outreach efforts to inform students of services and teach necessary skills.
- Participates in administration of financial aid awards and scholarship programs for the school and serves as liaison to College and University Financial Aid, Scholarship, and Financial Services offices in relation to these awards.
- Directs students to resources, policies and procedures related to ADA rules and provides guidance to students as needed.
- Advises student government.
- Oversees activities of recognized student organizations and student programs.
- Maintain high levels of and/or enhance student satisfaction with services.
- In collaboration with the school's registrar, facilitates verification and certification of credentials for graduates of the program.
- Supervises and oversees academic advising and coordinates as necessary with academic affairs and other relevant stakeholders
Note:
- Candidates will be required to provide proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19 upon commencing employment. Exemption (medical or religious) requests to this requirement will be considered in accordance with applicable law. Being fully vaccinated is defined for this purpose as being at least two weeks past their final dose of an authorized COVID-19 vaccine regimen. Final candidates must be fully vaccinated as of their first day of employment.
- Until further notice, this is a hybrid position, eligible to work remotely and work in the office.
QUALIFICATIONS
This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan. All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- MD with experience in academic medicine, or PhD or EdD in Education, Higher Education Administration, Counseling or Clinical Psychology, College Student Personnel, or related area required.
- A minimum of 3 years' experience in student affairs in higher education; experience in medical education strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with state and federal regulations pertaining to the management of student records and the maintenance of student rights, privacy, and safety ( e.g., FERP A, Americans with Disabilities Act, Title IX, Campus Safety & Security Act, etc.).
- Is knowledgeable about preparation for the medical curriculum and medical school requirements.
