About the CEHHS Office of Advising and Student Services
The University of Tennessee (UT) recognizes academic advising as a critical component of students' educational experiences and academic success, contributing to the university's persistence and retention efforts. Academic advising serves to develop and enrich students' educational plans in ways that are consistent with their personal values, goals, and career plans. The CEHHS Office of Advising and Student Services is the college's academic unit focused on undergraduate academic advising and student support initiatives - serving more than 3,000 of the university's 25,000 undergraduates. The office partners with faculty and the campus community to facilitate the holistic development of self-directed, life-long learners.
About the Position
The CEHHS Director of Advising directs the activities and operations of the CEHHS Office of Advising and Student Services. This position oversees the hiring, training, and supervision of student services staff, serves as an academic advising resource for faculty and advisors, and works closely with the college's administration in regards to strategic planning and undergraduate academic student success initiatives.
Management and Operations:
- Oversee the hiring, supervision, and professional development of the 17 staff members which includes two Associate Directors, two Assistant Directors, one Coordinator, eight Academic Advisor I/IIs, three administrative support specialists, and one Graduate Teaching Assistant.
- Manage and approve the unit's budget and participate in the College's planning and budget process.
- Utilize data to develop sustainable advising/retention initiatives including orientation and end-of-term "file" review.
- Oversees the office's assessment plan and advisor caseload management.
College and Campus Responsibilities:
- Serve as a member of the Dean's leadership team and the college's Administrative Council.
- Serve as a resource for department heads, associate heads, and faculty for issues concerning student success and progress towards graduation.
- Give final College approval on all curricular petitions, substitutions, DARS reviews from the registrar's office, uTrack resets, and semester overload requests.
- Coordinate the CEHHS college-level scholarship committee and the college-level scholarship distribution process (including urgent financial need requests).
- Serve as primary point-of-contact for the college's spring UG commencement ceremony and associated planning.
- Work with college's Communication and Marketing team to plan and staff the College Connect event for incoming first-year CEHHS students.
- Represent CEHHS at various university committees (e.g., Academic Advising Leadership Group, Undergraduate Council, etc.).
Direct Student Support and Advisor Professional Development:
- Advise students in distress, those with concerns/complaints about their advising experience, or those with academic issues such as academic dishonesty charges or significant graduation problems.
- Serve as the default advisor for all entering and readmitted students until they are assigned to a permanent advisor.
- Set on-boarding plan for new staff which addresses conceptual, informational, and relational framework for advising.
- Conduct first year and transfer orientation advising, as needed. Present at the family and guest orientation sessions (e.g., Summer Welcome.)
- Assists with recruitment events and the college advisory boards.
