Job Description:
The Associate Director of Residential Life is an integral part of the leadership team in the Department of Residential Life and provides leadership for advancing student success and engagement in the University's residence halls and apartments. The Associate Director supports the institutional mission and strategic priorities and provides visionary leadership for areas of responsibility to ensure that residential life is advancing SCSU's mission, vision, and goals as well as the division's strategic initiatives.
- Provide work direction, leadership and support to the Assistant Director of Residential Life; provide indirect leadership and support for full-time Residence Hall Directors, Graduate Assistants, Graduate Interns, Community Advisors, Student Operations Managers, Desk Attendants and student leadership organizations.
- Administer and provide leadership to staff charged with the daily administrative functions and delivery of programs and services to support the goals and objectives of the Residential Life Department. Provide leadership for the daily administrative operations of all university operated residence halls and departments. This includes, but is not limited to, administering the community living policy and procedure, residence hall opening and closing procedures, break housing, summer housing and providing leadership and oversight for residence hall front desk operations.
- Provide leadership in the development and implementation of student engagement and success in the residence halls which includes providing strategic direction for student leadership programs, administration of student conduct, the development, implementation and delivery of theme communities, assessment (CAS review), and supporting strategic marketing and communications initiatives. The Associate Director will work closely with identified campus partners in support of new student recruitment and orientation initiatives and events.
- Provide leadership in the development and implementation of recruitment, selection and training processes for all staff positions associated with the Residence Hall Staff, which includes the positions of: Assistant Director of Residential Life, Residence Hall Directors, Graduate Assistant, Graduate Interns, Student Operations Managers, Community Advisors, and Desk Attendants. Provide leadership in maintaining and updating staff training manuals, online training resources and materials, and in-service programs.
- Provide indirect support and direction for classified and unclassified positions working in the Central Office for the Department of Residential Life, as well as unclassified and student positions assigned to work Summer Camps and Conference Programs.
- As a member of the Leadership Team for the department, the position will provide leadership and assist in the development of long and short-range goals, strategic planning, policy development, and student learning outcomes that shape the overall objectives for department initiatives. As a member of the Leadership Team for the department, the position will serve, on a rotational basis, in an on call support role for the department.
- Represent the department on various University committees, task forces, and special projects as necessary. Participate in professional development activities and training programs to stay current with national trends, issues, and literature. Actively participate in local, regional, and national professional development conferences, workshops, and professional associations.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Residential Life, Dean of Students and/or the Vice President for Student Affairs.
Required Qualifications:
- A master's degree in Higher Education Administration, College Student Personnel, or related degree program is required plus a minimum of three years' experience supervising professional and student staff members in the overall operations and management of a residential life program.
- Progressively responsible leadership experience in a residence life program required.
- Must have prior live-in residence life experience.
- Experience adjudicating student conduct.
- Knowledge of regulations affecting residential life programs (i.e. Data Privacy Laws, Americans with Disabilities Act, the Fair Housing Act, and Title IX). Demonstrated commitment to serving diverse populations.
- Evidence of strong organizational, analytical and problem solving skills.
- Demonstrated interpersonal, conflict medication and effective communication skills.
- Advanced knowledge and demonstrated application of student development theory to support student engagement and success.
- Computer proficiency with Microsoft products and student housing/occupancy management platforms.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous experience working in an environment with collective bargaining units/union employees
- Previous experience administering a campus live-on requirement
- Previous experience advising student leadership groups
