Medical DirectorAbout the OpportunityThis job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. JOB SUMMARYThe Medical Director is the clinical lead at Northeastern University Health and Counseling Services (UHCS), working under the supervision of the Executive Director to supervise the delivery of high-quality medical care, health maintenance and wellness education to the Northeastern University community . The Medical Director supports the Executive Director of UHCS in developing and reviewing departmental medical policies and procedures adherent to the mission and aspirations of Northeastern University. The Medical Director collaborates with other clinical leaders including but not limited to the Supervising Physician, Director of Mental Health and Vice Chancellor of Wellness & Student Success to provide medical service management, promote collaboration of clinical and administrative services and integrate current research and best practices into coordinated UHCS educational and clinical programs, policies and procedures.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS| Medical Doctor (MD), Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) | Current, active, professional licensure to practice in the Commonwealth of MA | Current, active DEA and Massachusetts Controlled Substances registration | Five to ten years clinical experience as a clinician (MD, DO, NP, or PA) required | Two to five years' experience in college health and program management preferred.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & ACCOUNTABILITIESClinical Services Management| Actively participate in promoting a team approach to the delivery of healthcare in coordination with multiple disciplines including but not limited to on-site laboratory, sports medicine, and mental health. | Provide oversight to the UHCS medication, vaccine and medical supply inventory as it relates to UHCS mission, policy, clinical practice and fiscal management. | Provide oversight to the on-site laboratory as it relates to UHCS mission, policy, clinical practice and fiscal management. | Maintain a collaborative reporting and consultative relationship with state and local departments of public health and oversee all policies and procedures that relate to current student vaccination compliance, mandated reporting, and University response to infectious disease. | Maintain a collaborative relationship with NU Police Department, Nutrition Services, Dining Services, Disability Resource Center, WeCare, Sexual Violence Resource Center, Office for Prevention and Education and other university departments related to student safety and wellness.| Report all issues of potential patient, staff and community safety or other immediate concern to Executive Director, Environmental Health and Safety, Risk Management, or other manager, as appropriate, in a timely manner. | Respond to and/or report, as appropriate, all known instances of patient, family or University colleague dissatisfaction, insurance concerns, or adverse event possibly relating to UHCS involvement. |
Training and Supervisory | Provide implementation and oversight of interdisciplinary clinical programs, policies and procedures. | Review and translate current research and best-practice information for development and management of protocols and programs (relevant applicable areas may include sexual assault assessment and treatment, managing practices related to COVID, smoking cessation programs) | Provide clinical oversight and clinical consultation for medical team. | Manage and review the medical team staffing model, appointment guidelines and time-off schedules/guidelines and policies for clinician, nursing, and medical assistant teams. | Collaborate with the Patient Associate Team in providing appropriate information and training to allow for optimal coordination of clinical processes. | Actively participate in problem solving activities as a member of the Management team to make positive changes toward a goal of providing optimal health care effectively and with attention to optimal utilization of available resources.
Direct Patient Care| Assess, diagnose, and manage medical presentations in Northeastern students. Provide triage, episodic, acute, follow-up, and chronic care. | Order and interpret laboratory and other appropriate diagnostic tests and procedures. | Attend to emergencies and urgent care as appropriate. | Consult with specialists as needed. | Educate students on prevention, diagnosis, management, and adherence to the treatment plan. | Document history of present illness, past medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic findings accurately and in a timely manner, in the electronic health record system (eClinicalWorks).
