The Health Professions Advising Center (HPAC) at Cornell, a central unit that works in close partnership with the individual college advising offices, offers professional advisement and support to undergraduate, graduate, and professional students on the Ithaca campus, as well as to recent alumni interested in exploring and pursuing careers broadly in the health professions, including medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, physician assistant, public health, nursing, veterinary medicine, etc. The Health Professions Advising Associate Director, along with the Health Professions Advising Center team members (with additional pre-health advisors located in the colleges and units), is responsible for guiding students on their individual journeys toward a career in the health professions, from initial healthcare career exploration through the professional school application process. Our goal is to help our students find their unique niche as part of the health-related workforce that increasingly reflects the needs and diversity of our society.
The Health Professions Advising Associate Director will work directly under the leadership of the Director of the Health Professions Advising. The central office is transitioning to be organizationally situated within the Office of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, embedding the Center in the heart of the academic enterprise to facilitate strong connections with the academic and career advising community across the colleges, schools, and units. The Associate Director will be an essential thought partner to the Director in reimagining health professions advising at Cornell by enhancing existing services and creating innovative advising, programming, and mentoring opportunities for students. The Center staff will build upon existing valued partnerships across the colleges, schools, and units on the Ithaca campus, as well as Weill Cornell Medicine in NYC, the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program with Weill Cornell Medicine (WCM), The Rockefeller University (RU), and the Sloan Kettering Institute for Cancer Research (SKI).
Primary responsibilities for the Associate Director include: Develop and implement programs that engage alumni in formats such as career panels, individual campus visits, and mentoring opportunities for students; act as the primary representative for alumni during major campus visits, as well as for on and off-campus networking events; create a peer mentor program which includes recruiting, selecting, and supervising student volunteers; lead the Health Professions Advising Center in the absence of the Director; impact the organizational effectiveness of the HPAC by bridging team member connections across campus to staff and faculty colleagues to promote knowledge sharing, enhance communication flow, information accuracy, and timeliness of relevant updates; co-create professional development plans for the HPAC team with the Director; plan and create innovative programs, resources, and services to support students' exploration of possible pathways in human clinical or animal health professions; advising students and alumni on the curricular and co-curricular requirements, as well as interviewing skills and other essential traits needed to be competitive candidates for admission to postbaccalaureate programs and professional schools; evaluating student progress toward meeting these requirements.
This position is located in Ithaca, New York and the successful applicant will work on the Cornell campus. The Director may allow periodic hybrid work schedules depending on the needs of the center and students.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree
- 3 years to 5 years of college advising, pre-health advising, pre-professional advising, health professions admissions, or related experience
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion, including experience supporting students from diverse backgrounds, identities, and abilities that are underrepresented in STEM disciplines and health care professions
- Proven ability to successfully work in a collaborative team environment
- Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to establish positive and respectful working relationships with students, staff, faculty, and alumni
- Ability to synthesize and interpret data that will inform decisions aimed at aligning advising services to student and faculty needs
- Experience utilizing and applying technology to enhance the student advising experience
- Strong written and oral communication skills; Strong presentation skills for small and large groups
- Excellent strategic thinking and organizational abilities; demonstrated ability to manage multiple short- and long-term projects
- Commitment to maintaining the integrity of confidential materials and student information
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Education/Higher Education, College Student Affairs Administration, Psychology, Public Health, STEM disciplines or a related field that provides perspective on the undergraduate student lived experience and pre-health career interests
- Experience recruiting and motivating student and/or alumni volunteer groups
- Familiarity with pre-health application portals (AMCAS, AADSAS, AACOMAS, CASPA, PT-CAS, VMCAS, OTCAS)
