The advisor for Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology is responsible for undergraduate outreach, orientation, and academic advising for the Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology Department in the Physical and Biological Sciences Division. Undergraduate degrees administered by this department include:
- Biology B.S.
- Human Biology B.S.
- Molecular, Cell, and Developmental Biology B.S.
- Neuroscience B.S.
- Biology minor
The undergraduate advisor provides academic major and minor advising and services for all registered UC Santa Cruz undergraduate students in Physical and Biological Sciences throughout their tenure at our university, though most of the services focus on student success in physical and biological science majors once a student is proposed or declared.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATIONSalary Information: Salary Range: $27.00 - $30.00. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.

JOB DUTIES35% - Student Services:
- Applies professional Student Services concepts to a variety of student services with the aim of providing prescriptive advice and assistance to the student population served by the organization, and to faculty and management within that organization.
35% - Academic Advising:
- Provides advice and assistance to students on academic and degree progress and major requirements; assists students in determining a major, alternative academic options, resolve scheduling conflicts, and similar issues.
10% - Recruitment and Admissions:
- Implements outreach programs with specifically targeted institutions; advises prospective applicants on necessary academic preparation; appropriateness of program as it pertains to the prospective applicant's goals; reviews domestic transcripts for degree eligibility; initiates and arranges student recruitment visits.
10% - General Administration and Planning:
- Maintain detailed and precise student records for prospective, current and past students in both hard copy and electronic forms.
- Develop innovative techniques to effectively organize student information.
- Represent department on standing and ad-hoc campus committees: Department Advisory Group, First Year Advising Committee, Coalition of Department Advisors, UC Advisors Conference Planning Committees and ADEPT.
- Participate in campus discussions and planning relative to advising.
- Complete special projects as assigned.
5% - Student Conduct:
- Provides information to students and faculty regarding organization policies and procedures on student conduct.
5% - Student Orientation:
- Conducts orientations of new students.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS - Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Interpersonal skills sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job.
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
- Skills in service orientation.
- Ability in problem identification, reasoning, and critical thinking.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to engage in active listening.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills sufficient to independently set priorities and maintain a professional manner within a complex and fast-paced environment with competing needs and requiring attention to detail.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS - Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain a high level of professionalism in all circumstances, work effectively in a team situation, and make presentations to small and large audiences.
- Basic knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
- Knowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databases.
- Knowledge of University processes and procedures.
- Understanding of University rules and regulations.
