Detailed Description:The Director, Black Student Resource Commons is responsible for providing new, and integrating current, support services for Black students at all levels of recruitment, retention, and graduation, and fostering alumni relationships. Provide leadership, day-to-day direction, and long-range planning in the administrative oversight of the Black Student Resource Commons. Ensure BSRC functions as a welcoming and safe space to retain and support Black Students. This position is a co-leader for the Commons, in cooperation with the Director, United Front Multicultural Commons and Director, Gender Identity Resources. He or she will coordinate with a variety of offices on campus including Admissions, Financial Aid, Student Accounts, Student Support Services, Institutional Research, and the Center for Inclusion and Diversity, Center for Student Success, to ensure effective strategic short and long-range planning goals are constructed and achieved. Responsibilities include providing a wide range of support to students who identify as Black. Support includes organizing an orientation to USD and its services, peer mentoring, community building, identity formation, academic support and working in conjunction with the scholastic assistants program, Living Learning Communities (LLCs), and faculty advisors. The Director will collaboratively liaise with the Black Student Union, National Society of Black Engineers, African Student Union and other student organizations in support of Black students. The Director will be responsible for discovering and meeting challenges of recruitment, retention, and ongoing progression toward graduation, so that the quality of the student experience is as important as the outcomes of retention and successfully graduating from USD. At the core of their work, the Director will focus on how these entities support students' sense of belonging. Using data from a variety of sources, the Director creates, revises, and/or retires programs and offerings to ensure alignment with the University's Strategic Plan, Pathways, Goals, and the Student Affairs Strategic Plan, and Thriving Student Model.
Duties & Responsibilities:Student Development and Support:
- On an annual basis, provide educational sessions on topics students typically struggle with in their transition to the USD community such as social connections, academic preparation, awareness of and navigating campus resources, identity development, etc.
- Serve as a general resource and advisor to students who indicate Black among the race(s) with which they identify.
- Serve as the leader of the Black Student Retention and Recognition Committee. Track the Black cohort's academic progress and prescribe interventions when unsatisfactory progress is noted. Develop, facilitate an assessment plan to regularly monitor the Black student experience.
- Collaboratively liaise with the Black Student Union and other Black student organizations that empower Black students.
- Inform and encourage students to participate in leadership development opportunities for Black students at the local, regional and national level.
- Develop, implement and assess programs and opportunities grounded in the co-curricular learning outcomes for students to achieve greater cross-cultural competence including personal identity formation as well as bridging understanding among different groups.
- Develop, coordinate, implement and assess retreats, trainings and programs to promote cultural competence, leadership development, identity development and social justice.
- Develop curriculum that explores student development, leadership models, privilege, oppression and the intersection of identities in collaboration with other Diversity and Inclusion Student Commons (DISC) Directors
- Advance student leadership and personal development in collaboration with other partners across campus.
- Recruit, train and evaluate students, faculty and staff facilitators for program needs.
- Promote national, regional and university conferences and programs relevant to diversity and inclusion to students, faculty and staff.
- Provides consultation, support and referrals to individuals in crisis and/or seeking personal and professional development.
Community Development:
- Coordinate and lead a Black student/parent/family meeting during new student orientation.
- Maintain regular communication with all undergraduate and graduate students who indicate Black as one of the race(s) with which they identify through a newsletter and other collaborative efforts.
- Provide regular opportunities for the Black community (students, faculty and staff) to gather and share successes and challenges.
- Engage students in opportunities for service, collaboration and engagement within the San Diego region.
- In collaboration with students, faculty and staff, coordinate Black Graduates Recognition and Celebration Ceremony.
Administrative:
- Provide oversight of the spaces aligned with the BSRC.
- Recruit, hire, train and evaluate student employees in accordance with university timelines.
- Continually assess and refine the Commons' programs, systems and services to meet student and university needs.
- Serve as a resource to university students, staff and faculty.
- Lead and implement the strategic planning and assessment plan processes for the BSRC.
- Develop and review all BSRC publications and protocols.
- Communicate regularly with AVP regarding the BSRC and issues impacting USD's diversity and inclusion efforts, particularly those impacting Black students.
- Attend meetings including: Student Affairs Division, Student Life and The Commons.
- Prepare and submit reports as requested.
- Review and make recommendations to executive leadership on policies / practices of special concern to underrepresented or historically marginalized groups of students.
- Attend SOLES/SA Collaborative Graduate Assistant Training and meetings.
- Assess the effectiveness of program initiatives
- Ensure the space designated for the Commons is a welcoming environment for all students.
- Maintain the University and Associated Student Government funding/budgets allocated to the BSRC. Ensure funds are used appropriately and in alignment with university/Associated Student Government requirements.
- Contribute to or lead additional division/campus projects outside of typical duties to help further accomplish student success or organizational goals. Additional assignments may be seasonal, ad hoc or ongoing, depending on the project.
- Serve on University committees, as requested.
Career Development:
- Work collaboratively with the Career Development Center and Alumni Relations to support current and create potential new initiatives to support students' career development and maintain relationships with Alumni. This can include sessions on resume development, interviewing and networking skills, internships, Linked In, and job search strategies.
- Invite alumni back to campus to share their journey from campus to career.
Job Requirements:Minimum Qualifications: - Masters degree in related field required; doctorate preferred.
- 3 years higher education experience preferably in student outreach and support, and/or academic advising.
- Personal experience overcoming barriers similar to those confronting students in the target population (underrepresented - particularly Black students, first generation to college, low-income, students with disabilities).
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Excellent organizational, communication and outreach skills.
Preferred Qualifications: - Doctoral degree preferred.
- Knowledge of financial aid procedures preferred.
- Evaluation and assessment experience preferred.
- Evidence of leadership abilities.
Performance Expectations - Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: - Demonstrated ability to engage Black undergraduate and graduate students.
- Understanding of and ability to assess the Black college student experience.
- Specialized training in retention and support services to Black students.
- A cutting-edge awareness of services, programs, research, and outcomes beneficial to the support, retention, identity development, satisfaction, achievement and excellence of Black students.
- Willingness to support the Catholic mission and vision of the University.
- Demonstrated practice of centering diversity, equity, inclusion, and antiracism in ones work including an ongoing commitment to personal learning and development in this area.
- Demonstrated commitment to student learning and development in the co-curriculum and experience assessing the impact of programs and related services
Special Conditions of Employment: -
