Job Description:To prepare students for active participation and leadership through a distinctive leadership development program and a wide breath of involvement opportunities that contribute to a positive learning community. Direct, plan, organize, and supervise a wide variety of student co-curricular activities and services that integrate personal leadership development with experiential applications, both in the University community and in civic and community settings. The Director contributes to the Division of Student Affairs leadership efforts to provide a transformational student experience.
Duties and Responsibilities:1. Provides leadership, direction, and evaluation for all departmental programs and services including supervision of staff, publications, budget planning and maintenance, and overall procedures and guidelines.
- Develops and maintains an outcomes-based programming model, centered on the principles of diversity, inclusion, empowerment, and personal well-being.
- Supervises and evaluates professional staff including the Assistant Director of Community Engagement and other related personnel.
- Administers and manages the annual budget to maintain operations within fiscal constraints. Develop budget proposals as needed to ensure adequate financial support for departmental programs.
2. Develops, plans, and implements strategies and programs that promote leadership development through a comprehensive program that includes programming, leadership conferences, workshops, retreats, training, and the student involvement online platform.
- Designs and provides leadership for a comprehensive Leadership Scholar program including: recruitment, retention, programming, and mentoring of leadership students.
- Plans, implements and assess the Student Leadership Summit in collaboration with other university departments, faculty, outside speakers/experts, and community partners
- Develops and promotes leadership opportunities for adult and post-traditional students.
- Serves as co-advisor for MSMU chapter of NSLS (National Society of Leadership and Success) including communication with national officials, recruitment of new members, orientation, leadership training and overall event communication and coordination.
- Coordinates MSMU participation with the Public Leadership Education Network (PLEN) including communication with the PLEN office, interviewing of candidates, awarding of scholarships, and assessment of seminars, travel, planning and preparation of student scholars.
3. Promotes civic and community engagement across the University through a variety of events and programs.
- Works closely with the Associate Dean for Student Life and Leadership, coordinate and facilitate the MSMU Votes initiative. Plan and execute annual events and programs related to voter registration, voter/civic education, National Voter Registration Day and Constitution Day.
- Oversees the design, planning, and implementation of programming and events related to student service, volunteering and community/social action. Including the Community Student Ambassador Program, President's Invitation to Serve, and Alternative Spring Break programs.
4. Promotes the Mount Leads framework to provide a common language, understanding, and assessment of leadership across the university
- Works closely with the Associate Dean for Student Life and Leadership, coordinate and facilitate the Mount Leads workshops and conduct individual Mount Leads assessments
- Oversees the design, planning, and implementation of programming and events related to leadership using the Mount Leads framework
Other Duties and Responsibilities: - Acts in such a manner as to foster strong collegial relationships in Student Affairs and throughout the college and community.
- Serve on various university standing and ad-hoc committees and projects, as requested.
- Assist in campus activities and development including Admission Events, Homecoming, Leadership Activities, Institutional Advancement programs.
- Required to work some evenings and weekends.
- Perform other job-related duties, as assigned.
Requirements:Knowledge:- Knowledge of college student leadership development and of programs addressing the breadth of opportunities for leadership development in higher education.
- Working knowledge of staff and student training and supervision, as well as training and development of student managers and leaders.
- Knowledge of new student orientation, student government, clubs and organizations, and student involvement in general.
Abilities and Skills: - Effectively organize, prioritize and oversee multiple tasks to meet established deadlines.
- Effectively communicate and teach leadership development subject matter.
- Exercise sound judgment and decision-making.
- Display initiative.
- Understanding of, and sensitivity to, an ethnically diverse educational environment.
- Student-oriented, flexible team player who can work in a busy office.
- Strong oral/written communication, strategic planning, public relations, interpersonal, budget management and supervisory skills.
Education: - Master's degree in higher education/student affairs, women's studies or leadership studies. Doctorate preferred.
Experience:- Minimum of 3-5 years experience in administering a college program or service. Student Development/Student Affairs program administration preferred.
