Associate Dean for Transfer Students and Sophomore Class Dean
Job Summary:
Reporting to the Dean for Academic Planning & Class Advising, the Associate Dean for Transfer Students and Sophomore Class Dean provides leadership for the transfer student experience, with strong links to the mission and initiatives of the college. The Associate Dean works with students, campus partners, and faculty, and also supports the sophomore class in all academic and student life aspects, including helping students going through the major declaration process.
Job Description:
Duties & Responsibilities:
1. Under the direction of the Dean for Academic Planning & Class Advising, work with offices across the college to coordinate the transfer experience, and establish collaborative relationships with student life staff, residential life staff, and the staff of other campus offices to support this cohort of students.
2. Work with Enrollment Management on student retention and success, integrating goals into the transfer experience with the broader goals of liberal arts education.
3. Collaborate with pertinent offices on new student orientation programs (pre-orientation programs and orientation).
4. Work directly with a caseload of students as an academic adviser and class dean. Provide individual consultations and support, offer options, explain institutional policies, etc.
5. Maintain detailed student advising notes and track student situations, coordinating with faculty and campus partners as appropriate.
6. Serve on the Committee on Instruction as a representative for the Dean for Academic Planning and Class Advising and the Deans' Office.
7. Serve as primary adviser to the Honor Board and provide annual training to board members regarding the academic integrity process.
8. Serve as adviser to the Transfer Student Advisory Board.
9. Maintain active professional development through participation in relevant professional associations and campus opportunities.
10. In collaboration with the Junior Class Dean, jointly supervise an Administrative Assistant, assigning projects, responsibilities and tasks as appropriate.
11. Assume responsibility for special projects as assigned by the Dean for Academic Planning & Class Advising, and any other duties as assigned in support of department, division or College needs.
Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
Excellent written and public-speaking skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills.
Highly organized and detail-oriented; meticulous record keeping skills are critical.
Able to independently manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
Demonstrated understanding of student development theories and familiarity with academic advising principles strongly preferred.
Demonstrated ability to create engaging student programs and workshops.
The ability to understand and adhere to college and national policy and to decipher between confidential and need-to-know information is a must.
Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work effectively with a wide variety of individuals, including students, faculty, administrators, alumnae, parents and members of the public
Demonstrated ability to work with and among diverse communities
Demonstrated experience or interest in working in a liberal arts environment
Diplomacy and the ability to work as a member of a team is essential.
Experience with Slate and/or Advocate a plus.
Qualifications:
* M.A. in a related field required
* Minimum 5 to 7 years of related/applicable work experience required, preferably in higher education, with background in academic advising, teaching, or related field.
* Must be willing to work during the summer months; some weekend and evening work will occasionally be required.
