The College of the Environment seeks to increase the number and collective diversity of academically outstanding undergraduate applicants with an interest in environmental science (terrestrial, marine, and freshwater) and environmental studies. To achieve these goals, we need to ensure that our College is highly visible, and relevant, to high school students across the state and the country, and to transfer students, particularly in western Washington.
The Undergraduate Student Services Specialist leads the implementation and continuous refinement of the college-wide undergraduate student recruitment strategy, including but not limited to: virtual and social media advertising; local, regional and national networking; and innovative marketing and recruitment activities on and off campus. This position must continuously use their social and facilitation skills to connect to current and prospective students. This individual will serve as an important liaison between the College of the Environment and campus student services units responsible for recruiting students to the UW, including but not limited to: Admissions; First Year Programs; OMA&D Academic Counseling Services; Undergraduate Advising. The Undergraduate Student Services Specialist will serve as the main point of contact for prospective undergraduate students and their parents, teachers and community members on and off campus, and a central resource for information about undergraduate academic programs and opportunities within the College of the Environment. This position will require being completely comfortable on web and virtual platforms, designing and implementing cutting-edge virtual recruitment programming. This position will provide a positive force in social media, working within platforms regularly used by high school and college students to gain a local, regional and even national following.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
•The Undergraduate Services Specialist will deliver and continuously refine branding of the CoEnv undergraduate programs and the CoEnv undergraduate experience at a local, regional and national level, in terms that are easy to understand, and in concepts that are attractive to current generations of students who want to be sustainable, save the world, and further their chances of an excellent career future. Collaborate with the College’s Academic Affairs team; the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion team; the Marketing and Communications team; and undergraduate advisers in college units to deliver superior events, activities and products. •The 100 Schools Project: Maintain a network of contacts at key high schools (E-STEM focused schools, environmental science academies, top feeder schools to the UW) and Youth Environmental Education Network members. Develop a regional network of contacts at top community college feeder schools for the UW and organizations such as Seattle MESA and the UW in the High Schools program. Work with diversity leaders on and off campus to realize positive and powerful recruitment strategies specifically targeting underserved communities. •Develop and lead online, social media and in-person events for prospective students and admitted students which showcase CoEnv students, faculty and facilities. Coordinate the college’s participation in key campus recruitment/outreach events at UW –Admitted Student Preview Days, OMA&D Purple and Gold Days, Summer Advising & Orientation Sessions, Dawg Daze, etc. Work closely with all grant-funded recruitment programs to assist them is successfully recruiting a large, diverse pool of applicants. •Manage the College’s Undergraduate Ambassador Program, including annual recruitment, selection, and training of ~20 ambassadors. Lead and mentor the ambassadors to participate in a wide range of recruitment activities to prospective students, including online and social media programming, Admitted Student Preview activities, and on-campus events, tours, and “shadowing.” •In collaboration with UW Admissions, represent the College at key national and regional college admissions conferences and fairs. Work with local partners to develop an exciting, responsive in-person programming for community college transfers. •Manage CoEnv Undergraduate Student Scholarships, including monitoring scholarship fund budgets, advertising annual scholarship opportunities, organizing application materials for dissemination to the committee, tracking disbursements, and coordinating with the Advancement team on donor stewardship activities. •Maintain annual numbers of undergraduate applicants, admittants, and matriculants, as well as other quantitative data indicating the success of the recruitment program. •Manage college-wide advertising of undergraduate courses for non-majors and pre-majors, and courses focused on key college-wide themes (climate, diversity, science communication, etc.). Manage course support and time schedule for a small number of C ENV courses. •Assist CoEnv Academic Affairs staff as needed with other projects and tasks, including but not limited to in-person events and activities for current undergraduate students, graduate students and postdocs.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree AND at least four years’ experience in student services, recruitment, student counseling, or related experience.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
• A highly motivated self-starter with an ability to develop strategies, set and meet goals, make decisions independently, and multi-task and prioritize in fast-paced environments. • Demonstrated lead experience in the management and facilitation of student groups. • Web, online and social media savvy, able to create and maintain a strong online and social media presence. • Team player who can play both a leading and a supporting role. • Experience working with underrepresented populations. Must be able to effectively communicate across various demographics beyond and within the UW campus. • Experience with undergraduate admissions. • Experience with teens and families. • Strong quantitative data manipulation skills such as advanced Excel spreadsheet capability. • Strong communications, interpersonal, presentation and computer skills. • Leadership in event planning and implementation experience. • Flexibility and availability to work evenings and weekends.
DESIRED:
